Camp Crows Feet, Notorious Sock Knitters | January 17, 2008
I’m a freshman who has signed on for sock camp. Can anyone offer me any insights to planning the adventure of my dreams? (still can’t believe DH went for this one!)

How do you find out about the sock camp? Did you sign up last year? Will there be another one this year? Where is it this year? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!
I too am a freshman and I am JAZZED! I fly in to Seattle and am booked for the seaplane flight to Rosario. Any suggestions regarding clothing? I am thinking jeans, tshirt and tennies? No fashion show here, right?
So fill us in - how did you find out about sock camp?
The information usually comes with the arrival of the first kit… So I can’t wait to see the dates and activities. I am hoping I can go this year, last year was a bust for me due the date.
Everyone seemed to have such a great time last year!
Sock Up!
I would love to do the Sock Camp this year! This is my first year. But I remember hearing about it and living vicariously through other bloggers last year.
One of the best experiences I have had and plan on going again. I encourage this adventure - it clears the mind and nourishes the soul.
I am looking forward to Sock Camp, too. I haven’t made my travel reservations yet. Who is flying into SeaTac and when? How are you getting to Rosario from SeaTac? Would you like to get together at the airport and travel on together? Post away!!
Carole from NJ
For those of us who have not received info yet - would you ming revealing the dates of the event?
I will post details here later today.
Fliers will be in your shipments
Hello,
I am new to sock camp two! I read about on several blogs and decided that this year I had to be there! So I have signed up and I’m planning on flying into Seatac on Monday morning early. I will then be catching a bust that takes me to the dock to catch the ferry to the island. I don’t know anyone so this is the only mode of transportation that I found. I understand that you can rent a car and drive there. However, since I don’t know the area I was going to catch the bus. If anyone is interested in taking this adventure with me let me know. We can plan on meeting at the airport.
I registered as soon as I received the flier in last year’s sock club shipment. Then I made reservations at Rosario. They recommended the float plane from Kenmore Air. I am flying from Phoenix to Seattle, I booked early and found a decent fare. I arrive around 11:30. I am booked to fly on Kenmore Air from Lake Union to the dock at Rosario. Kenmore Air has a shuttle that picks you up, but you have to book your space on that too. The floatplane takes about an hour. The ferry takes longer, I am not sure how long, but it is 80 miles from Seattle, according to the map. 80 miles on a ferry might take several hours. The reservation desk at Rosario recommended Kenmore Air.
I’m a first time sock clubber and really interested in sock camp. I’ve been to Rosario Beach (not to stay - just a day trip) and it is beautiful. So, can’t wait to find out the dates to see if I can finagle the time off.
I know Tina said she’d post details but here goes….
Sock Camp AKA Camp Crow’s Feet is April 14 through the 19th (Monday evening to Saturday morning.) It’s at Rosario Resort on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington. Kenmore Air has both a float plane that takes you right to Rosario and a land based version that takes you to the airport in Eastsound on Orcas. To take the ferry requires a bus ride or a car because the ferry doesn’t run from Seattle proper at this time of year so you have to catch the ferry north of Seattle in Anacortes. The bus is a shuttle that leaves from Sea-Tac. You’ll need to check the ferry schedule and be sure you’re looking at the Spring schedule because the one that pops up right now is still the Winter schedule and times change with each new schedule. You also need to be sure the ferry time you pick is one that docks at Orcas Island as not all ferries go to all the islands. Another option is to get a group together and take a water taxi which will also take you right to the dock at Rosario. (This can be expensive if you don’t have a lot of people to share the cost.) You won’t have a car on the island if you take this option, not that one is really necessary as you should be able to hook up with other campers for dinner in town should you decide not to eat at the resort.
Clothing is casual but it might (will) be cool or rainy so bring appropriate outer wear. Jeans, t-shirts/turtle-necks, tennies, sweater, hat would be my list with a packable rain jacket for the ferry to help keep out the wind. There is wireless computer access at the main lodge but maybe not in the rooms. (I don’t know if its been upgraded from last year.) There is a pool and the spa and a workout room so if your into that bring what’s needed there. Umm the pool got some interesting action last year so be brave and bring your suits. I’m hoping HizKnits(Stephen) is planning another show for us to learn. (Just remember our (lack of) skill level!)
I’ve probably forgotten tons of things you want to know so wait for Tina and your flyer in the first kit. There may also be something on the main Blue Moon Fiber Arts website eventually.
I’m really excited about all the firsties that are thinking about coming to camp. We had a great time last year and I’m looking forward to more of the same this year. Happy Knitting All, Alice
Wow! Practically a whole week of knitting! I can’t wait! And thanks for the info.
I’m really excited to go to sock camp after all the fun everyone had last year. I’d enjoy sharing a ride with someone via car/boat/ferry/seaplane/taxi/whatever. I could even share a room if someone needed. I’m coming all by myself! Are there any shops in the area for a yarn crawl? I’d come a day early or leave a day later if a yarn fling was in my future! I’m just sayin’…it could happen.
I want to go too! Will have to wait to get sign up info to make it official I guess. I am willing to share room, transportation or whatever it takes to get there. This will be a first for me and it just sounds like so much fun and a real get away. Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Suzanne
I’m excited about sock camp. This will be my first year going and I think it will be a lot of fun. I don’t know how much and what kind of sock yarn to bring. Veterans?? Any advice??
Thank you for the info Alice & knitter. I was leaning toward either renting a car and ferrying or seaplane. I am still thinking. I hope I still have time. I haven’t even made my plane resv yet!
As long as you’ve signed up for camp you have plenty of time to make roommate, room, and travel plans. I think the resort will honor camp rates until March sometime. As to the yarn question I wouldn’t bring much more than your current project. There will be yarn available for purchase. Last year we pretty much striped the displays bare the first buying opportunity. We got to see lots of Rare Gems and factory seconds that you won’t see anywhere else but at a Blue Moon Fiber Arts event and a new color and pattern released at camp. The Sockateers worked hard all week balling skeins for we campers. So you won’t need much more than travel knitting and empty needles. Most of us had at least one new project on needles by the end of camp. Once I finalize my plans I’ll let you all in on the future adventures of Alice and Chappy. Happy Knitting, Alice
Thanks Alice for the reassurance, being new to this, one really does not know what to expect, or how much to stress or not stress about being able to go. I feel much better now - it is hard to concentrate on knitting when the stress level is too high.
Suzanne
Hi Alice–what is a rare gem? Thanks for the info about bringing just a travel project and needles, I was curious about that. How many “empty needles” did you bring? And–are there needles for sale there?
My understanding is that a Rare Gem is either the last of discontinued colors or a dye experiment that while lovely is not repeatable on the mass scale that is required for an actual colorway. It may be skeins that Tina used while “tweaking” the colors to match what’s in her mind’s eye or just playing around trying new ideas or maybe a happy accident with a dye bottle. Tina can say more accurately than I. That’s my attempt to answer “What’s a Rare Gem?” and I’ll stick to it until told other wise by the all knowing.
As to needles, last year they had us bring at least one set (your choice of dpn’s, 2 circs, ML) of each size between 0 and 5 plus a size 6(?) at least 40″ long. Of course, I being an over achiever of true colors, brought both dpn’s and 2 circs as they are my preferred needles for socks. I don’t remember how many half done socks I brought along but I had at least 2 more on needles by the end of camp. (and had signed up for Sockaplooza 4) Happy Knitting, Alice
Since I’m a newbie (and a very, very happy newbie) to the club, can anyone give me a ballpark idea of the cost for Camp Crows Feet? Since I live in the Seattle area, transportation shouldn’t be as much of an issue but if I want to save for this, I need to start now! And of course, I’m so darn anxious that I’m not content to wait until I get the flyer in my first shipment! Just an idea–and no, don’t worry about estimating how much I’ll spend on yarn–ha! That knows no bounds! Deb
I think it’s around $650 plus lodging plus some meals plus yarn. But worth every penny. Start seriously saving those schekels now and be sure to send in a deposit ASAP. Final payment due in mid-February but that’s just for the camp the room charge and shopping don’t hit you until April. Hope that helps you establish a workable budget and we get to see you at camp. Happy Knitting, Alice
I have sent in my registration - and will book a room today - does anyone want to share a room? Sounds like so much fun.
Suzanne
Ok, so I livel in oregon city (south and east of portland oregon) and I’m signed up for sock camp. is there anyone in my area that either wants a roomate or would there be portland area people who would be interested in car pooling up?Hate to go alone.
Also, are any of us going to Madrona (tacoma spinning-knitting party)? I think it might be fun to meet up for tea and get to know some of us. Let me know.
Thanks
Gini I live in Vancouver and would be glad to carpool!
Nadine, sounds good. next issue is getting you my email.
you can contact me at luv2spin@bctonline.com
I am new this year, and I’ve been asking about camp since I got a space in this year’s club. I haven’t heard yet about whether or not there is room for me but I have my fingers crossed. If I get a spot at camp, anyone flying in can take the airport shuttle up I-5 (main artery through Seattle and up to Vancouver BC), and hop off at Stanwood exit. This would maybe let someone fly in the night before (preferable?), and I’d be happy to pick you up at the shuttle just off the highway, and bring you here to be my guest overnight on Camano Island, then we can make the 40 minute drive to Anacortes and the ferry over to Orcas first thing the next day… we can yarn shop-hop our way if we have time. I only have one guest room, but we do have an air mattress that could be put in the studio for a second person. My car is a new generation VW Bug, so I could take one tall and one short person, and still manage our bags, if you don’t bring lots. If I have just one guest, we’d have lots of room for baggage! Just offering…
I didn’t get any info on the camp, what is it and where is it? THere wasn’t anything in my box that just came. I am a freshman to the club. I live in Aloha, which is just west of Portland.
There should have been a brochure in your package, Annette. Maybe call and ask if they can send you one. Alice posted earlier in this thread most of the details, including the dates: April 14-18. I read that new members may sign up and if there is any room left after that, it would then be opened to non-members. As with last year, Stephanie Pearl McPhee and Cat Bordhi will be leading a workshop. There will be other workshops and activities for us, as well. It is going to be on Orcas Island in Washington at the Rosario Rock Resort.
If you want an idea what we did last year, you can read my past blog post: http://tapmouseknits2.blogspot.com
I think I had posted during our time there, but most of it when I got back, since internet access was non-existent from my room and I think we (attendees) were competing for access/time! My posts would be March or April of last year.
I just wanted to add that if you are taking the ferry over to Orcas Island and you don’t have a car you will need to take a shuttle to the resort. The dock where the ferry arrives is at least 20 min by car to the resort.
ALso did not receive a brochure in my package. I’d love to find out more, but the info seems very scattered! Is there a link I can follow? How and where does one sign up, and is there even still room??
Thanks!
MJ
Ditto here on the brochure - not one in my package. I’m not sure if I could go, but would like to explore the possibility.
Didn’t receive a brochure on the Sock Camp in my package but would like to find out the details and possibly register. Sounds like fun!
I didn’t receive a brochure about Sock CAmp in my kit either
I’d really like the information please. Thank you so much!
For those looking for information try contacting BMFA either by phone or by sending an email to Both are on the masthead at the top of each blog page. If you read the comments a lot of the answers to your questions are already there.
As for the initial question of the post, I suggest looking up and finding the closest LYSs along your route to camp and be sure to build in lots of time. I have no idea where you will be coming from, but there are LOTS of LYSs in the Seattle area and in different parts of Oregon. Last year, I knew the main roads we’d be driving on so I made a list of shops and we stopped at some, time permitting. I enjoyed seeing all of the different shops. Plus, I took advantage of the Asian food offerings in the Pacific Northwest by having my fill of sushi and Thai. Thsi made my trip to and from camp lots of fun.
Suzanne If you still need a roommate email me at fzuernerATgmailDOTCOM This is my second year.
I believe Suzanne is covered! (I’d emailed her too.)
Hi All! I’m new to the club and to camp this year. I can hardly wait. I had a couple of questions I hope someone might know the answers to.
Do you need a car when you get there? Where can you get a good latte that’s close? What’s a sockateer? Do lots of campers come alone?
The last one is the biggie for me (okay the coffee is pretty important too). So far I don’t know anyone who is going and honestly I’m a big baby and worried I’ll end up sitting around with all my yarn and no one to talk to.
Lots of campers come alone in fact I’d say most of us come on our own. But you make friends really fast. Lots of campers met on the ferry heading to camp last year. No you won’t need a car. You can get a shuttle from the airport to the ferry and I’m sure there will be campers on almost every ferry so getting a ride to Rosario shouldn’t be a problem. I think because it was off season the resort made arrangements to meet some of the ferries with shuttles. Call the resort to check on that. The latte however may be a problem. This isn’t Seattle and there isn’t a Starbucks on every corner. Hopefully some one else will be able to answer that one as I don’t drink coffee. Looking forward to meeting you and keep in reading the blog because that’s how you’ll find a ride/roommate/lattes. Happy Knitting, Alice
Thanks Alice!
Just wanted to find out if anyone else besides myself, are coming in on Monday the 14th.(Sort of screwed up flight times) My flight comes in at 10:55 on the 14th, hopefully I can catch the shuttle to Anacortes by 12 then on to the ferry by 3:30 if I am reading the time schedules right. Hopefully I will be at Orcas around 4:45 and hopefully there will be a shuttle to the Resort at the ferry! I plan on making reservations for the shuttle next week, I just waned to check in with everyone to see if maybe anyone else might be traveling at the same time! Still working on homework! Thanks Sheila P
