Notorious Sock Knitters | January 18, 2008
Hi everyone!
I’m very bad, I didn’t finish most of last year’s kits. (There were good reasons, like wanting to graduate and such) I only fully finished the first one, and I’m very close to finishing the second one
Would it be better to finish last year’s socks first? Or should I finish the one I’m working on now really fast and just start fresh with this year?

IMHO there’s no “better” or “should” .. surely it is your personal preference. Each kit brings new enjoyment and challenges there’s no sequence to them (i.e. you don’t need to have done January’s to be able to tackle the next one). Personally I try and do them around the time they arrive so that I can follow any current feedback them here and at Ravelry, but for the one that I didn’t do that with (Grasshopper, which I still may not even do) I will just tackle when the whim takes me!
I, too, have thought about this. My OCD dictates that if I didn’t do them at the time they were sent (oops) that I need to still do them “in order.” Silly, really. Because I am never faithful to one project at a time, I might start Summer of Love Lace (the first one I haven’t finished of 07) while also working on Jan 08. Who knows!
I say do both. Maybe one month you’ll prefer a kit from last year so do that one, maybe the next month you’ll prefer the kit you just got. Or your could really challenge yourself and tackle a sock a month by combining your kits.
If it were me, I would start fresh with the new year, but work on the previous year kits when the mood grabbed me. Buy more sock needles and have WIPs out the yin-yang! Of course, this is coming from someone who only got in this year, so take it worth a grain of salt.
Congratulations on graduating! I wish that were on my list for ‘07. As I work Lenore, I thinking much the same as you are. I agree with Tara- multi-WIP. New kits during even months, cruising along on the foot or calf of one of the ‘07 socks.
I have been choosing to carry the skein of my ‘next yarn’ in a plastic bag right along with my current sock. I get to look at what is coming while I am knitting away. I do not carry the pattern, lest I get really distracted and start them without finishing a pair.
Crazy, but it works well for me.
Oh crud, this made me realize that shipping time will start soon. Why crud? Because I’ve got 3 pairs of socks on my needles now, and I just wound another ball of STR to have a fairly mindless sock going on (the first three are on pause because I’ve lost the 2nd ball on one, another is out of Schaefer Anne and the tiny yarn needs a little more attention, and the 3rd is the Marble Arches socks which are apparently from the first year…). If I start that ball it’ll be #4 on the needles, and then when the first kit comes I’ll probably be tempted to get going on those which means pair number five, and at the thought of that, I think I need a little bit of a lie down….
I realize that may or may not help you with your decision. Um…finish what you’ve got on the needles, then maybe work 2 at a time until you’re all caught up? Let me know how that works out. :O
I like to mix it all up. I just finished the Summer of Love Lace socks, and will start the Summer Solstice socks next. That way, I can think about the warm day in June that I received the package (and how I was way too busy to start knitting) while it is ten below zero outside. Plus, the colorway is nice and hot and bright–also good attributes when it is mostly white outside now. Go with whatever feels right. Mostly, have fun!
I’ve just finished Lenore and have two others on needles. One from Cat’s new book and Titania’s Revenge from 06.I plan to start Decembers in the next few days. I try to keep them at different stages (ribbing, leg, heel - - )because if I get bored or tired and switch to different pattern I seem to get them done faster. Seems we all have our own ways to keep us knitting! you will find your own soon I’m sure. Enjoy ENJOY ! !
Isn’t wonderful that we have so many options? I love the fact that I always have a wonderful waiting for me to knit it!
I’m in the same boat-I finished my first two kits (but gave up on the Grasshopper in favor of a spiral rib), and have the Firebirds on needles. Since I received the new Cat Bohrdi book for Christmas, I’m really drawn to her patterns, so I think the Salish Sea Socks will be next. So many socks-so little time!!
So many choices so little time! I am choosing to work on kits from last year on the months that I do not have a kit for this year. Right now I am working on the Salish Sea Socks from December which I will finish soon and will start the kit we get this week!!!!!!!!! in February and have it done by the end of the month, then I may tackle the summer of love socks because I have the first cuff done and it is lovely. I agree with Pauline though, its great to have choices and something wonderful waiting!
I wind my yarn into “yarn cakes” and leave them lined up on the piano, where I can see them every day. Yes, sometimes there are 2 or 3 different yarns there, depending on how backed up I have gotten, but if they’re in plain sight, I have time (while knitting up the current socks) to decided on the next pair! So, I say wind up all the yarn and knit whatever color strikes your fancy!
Thanks for all the advice!
I finished the Grasshoppers today (they’re lovely!) and I think I’m going to work on another project for a few days. I think I want to do everything in order, but I don’t want to get all “socked out” before the club starts this year!
Cherie obviously doesn’t have cats.
Maybe Cherie has a cat like Stephanie’s that doesn’t really play with yarn unless it’s a certain sweater in progress. I know if I did what she did my DH would complain about the dead sound coming from a piano covered in yarn cakes. I just have too many “Next!”. (and that wouldn’t include socks in progress on needles) Happy Knitting what ever order you decide to tackle things in. It really is your choice. Alice
Hah! I have FOUR cats!! They do very little damage, considering that they’re cats, and well, basically untrainable! But yes, they do love to sleep on a nicely laid-out expanse of knitted fabric…
I say, “Sock as you please!” But then again, I am also one who has quite a few sock UFOs!
