Notorious Sock Knitters | January 19, 2008
I am so excited about doing this but was wondering from others about how hard the patterns are. I noticed some people are blogging that some of the patterns last year were overwhelming. I’ve been knitting for over 20 years (gosh that makes me sound old) but usually use hand died yarns that are beautiful so they don’t need a lot of pattern work.
Will we be able to ask for help here? Can’t wait for the first package to come ![]()

This is my first year as well, so I really can’t say anything fo sure. However, seeing as how I’m totall BMFA obsessed, I kept an eye on the club blog last year and it looks like there’s a lot of discussion about things ppl are finding difficult. I’m sure that if you’re having any problems, someone would be more thn happy to give you some pointers.
Absolutely! As strange as it sounds–you’re among friends. This group is obsessed. It could be knitting, socks, hand-dyes yarn, all things BMFA-whatever. It’s a little surreal.
Your membership comes with a world of other knitters. The blog brings them into your living room. Ask, ask, ask. You can knit these socks. And there are close to 2000 other knitters do theirs right alongside of you.
Make treats. Introduce yourself to the wonderful person who delivers and/or accepts your mail. Start telling your family that you have THE Golden Ticket, your yarn-candy is coming.
Blog Mom Alice here, glad to have you aboard. All levels of knitters are members of this really neat club and while some may find the patterns troublesome others will find them easy. Some of the patterns or colors will become your instant favorites and others will languish in your stash. I look at the patterns and colorways as an opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and learn new things. It’s easier for me to do this as part of this club than to pull patterns out of a book and yarn out of my stash or LYS. I do give some of the club socks away but I try to attempt all of them as written. Remember you don’t tend to see much from people who aren’t having troubles and complete the current kit with out problems. People are much more likely to post a question than an “I finished yet another sock and it looks like the pictures that came with the pattern” post unless they were one of the people that first posed a question and the answers let them succeed at something they never thought they could do.
As Lisa says this is the place to come to ask your questions. You might double check that your question hasn’t been answered in another post before you write up a new post. The blog is also the place to express your joys and sorrows with any BMFA related projects. I like hearing from new members and the more voices the more ways to solve a problem and to share your excitement. Hope you stop for a visit often and that you enjoy the year ahead. Happy Knitting, Alice
I think the best thing is that you can do whatever you want! Sometimes, I loved the yarn/pattern combo so I did them as sent. Other times, I loved the dyes so much and wanted no pattern interference, so I did super basic socks with that yarn. When in doubt, wait a few weeks then look for pictures here and on ravelry for inspiration! But like others said, if you love the pattern, don’t let complexity scare you off…ask questions!
When I joined the club last year I had never done a toe up sock or a short row heel. I was very excited when the 1st sock came and it was a toe up (Inside out sock) sock. I completed it without any difficulty. The directions that come with the pattern are clear and precise. I never had any issues with the patterns even though I still have 3 to complete from last years club. I am a little slow but I am catching up. You are going to love this club, its the best and who would want to join a club that doesnt challenge you a bit? Right! Have fun and if you dont want to do the pattern that comes with the kit then do what you want. There are no rules and I love that aspect about it also.
Great thanks for the responses.
I am also new to the sock club, but not new to Blue Moon!!
I think I bought one of every color at Rheinbeck!!
I look forward to meeting all of you!
Carolyn
