Notorious Sock Knitters | January 21, 2008
I was standing in line yesterday afternoon to see the Edward Hopper exhibit at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC) and knitting on my Emergency Sock Project (basic toe-up Austermann Step sock on a 12″ Addi circular–it’s the project I keep in the car for when I’m stuck in traffic or in a line) when a lady came up and asked what I was making. I answered, “A sock, and I made the ones I’m wearing.” She said, “So did I!” and proceeded to show me a lovely pair of Summer of Love Lace anklets. I squeed and said, “Rockin’ Sock Club!” We had a lovely “Yes, I’m signed up for and excited about the ‘08 club” moment, then my line moved and she was gone.
Anyhow, Hi! to the nice lady, and I hope to see you here on the message board. This reminds me again that it would be fun to have a Rockin’ get together in northern Virginia/DC/Maryland. I’m not finished all of last year’s socks YET (too much Christmas knitting, plus I had to steal the needles from *my* Summer of Love for a pair of Valentine’s Day socks), but as soon as the V-Day socks are done, I’m going to get my GPA up.
Melissa in northern Virginia, stuck alone in my office on a holiday (I’m a contractor, and the government has off. Sigh)

I’d love to do a get together!! I met a few more NSKs when the Yarn Harlot came to the Bailey’s Crossroads Borders last Fall.
I saw that Hopper exhibit the Friday after Thanksgiving! It was wonderful!
I live in Richmond, VA. Another East Coaster. I was also drove up for the Yarn Harlot when she was at Bailey’s Crossroads in Sept. I was the one with the knitted chicken - in case you saw me.
I’ve ben lucky enough to meet many club members….though it was last year while I *wasn’t* a member, so it was just a lot of me being really jealous:) I’m in the DC area, too, and uld love to do some kind of meetup. I worked in a LYS until a month ago so I got to see a lot of our customers and visitors RSC projects.
I’m on the Maryland side of the river - a VA/DC/MD get-together sounds like a great idea!
I highly recommend doing a get-together. We did one in the San Jose/South Bay last year, and it was the best knitting fun I had all year! RSC knitters are good people.
that’s a nice story.
Oh, poor thing. Maybe you should work for a different contractor (because we had yesterday off). And, yes, absolutely(!), to a MD/VA/DC get-together
I would be interested in a MD/VA/DC get-together. I live in Montgomery County.
Lou of the knitted chicken, I think I was sitting right behind you in line for the Harlot. You had your Camp Cockamamie T-shirt on, right? The chicken was awesome.
I *had* to go to the Hopper exhibit to see where the profits I make for my company went. I work for “The global consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton,” which sponsored the whole shebang. We sponsor Marketplace and All Things Considered on NPR, too, so I hear that radio announcement all the time.
Booz Allen may be a touch stingy on holidays (although they’re on par with my previous employer), but they do give floating days, pay well (me at least), and are generally a good company to work for (been with ‘em for 2.25 years). Can’t complain, except when I’m the only one in the office.
I’ll try to come up with a brilliant idea for a VA/DC/MD NSK mixer soon!
Count me in as another interested in a DC area get together!
I’m in the DC area as well and another knitter I know from my local knitting meet-up is also in the sock club this year. So there are definitely enough of us to do something in the DC area.
I’m in Richmond kind of, at least during the work week. Hi Lou! I have been slacking on my Wednesday night knitting group (life stuff getting in the way - I hate when that happens)…but if there’s a gathering, I would love to try and make it. I actually live in Williamsburg, but I’m always in Richmond, or it seems like it anyway.
Lou here — I changed it so my nickname would show (same as it is on Ravelry). Yes, that was me in the Cock Cockamaime T-shirt. Wearing the shirt and bringing my knitted chicken was my shameless strategy to have Stephanie remember me from camp.
I’d love a DC/MD/VA RSC get-together! My inlaws are in Arlington so I have a place to stay if needed.
I DID enjoy the Hopper exihibt — very much. His use of color to convey natural light or shade, etc. is brilliant.
Oh, and Monet, get your sock-knitting self back to Wednesday Knitting night!! You are missed and our group is in danger of falling apart from low turn-out.
A belated response to Melissa — it’s taken me a little time to iron out the posting problems — since I’m the “nice lady” you met at the National Gallery. My mother — age 79, who also taught me to knit — thinks I am a complete nut case, but I couldn’t resist asking what you were working on…. Although the wait for the Hopper exhibit was long, the surroundings were splendid — almost as wonderful as the exhibit itself.
A meet up would be a lot of fun. I live in DC, work in MD, and spend a fair bit of time in VA so I’m agnostic as to location. Now I just have to get caught up on my sock knitting….
I’m in Vienna (VA) and open to meet-up. (Also see another post started after this one, by Amanda, with the same idea.) I’m on Ravelry as knitsnknishes. And Lou/happystasher, I remember you & your knitted chicken, too. I was standing near you in line waiting to get the tickets (for the Yarn Harlot’s book-signing) before she spoke.
I’m in DC as well and would definitely be interested in a meetup!
Lou - the Happy Stasher - I will be back at knitting starting in February…I have made it my “Not So New New Year’s Resolution”. I will be there…count on it…Wednesday, Febraury 6th…
Be there, or be square!!!
