Another pattern question or two or three

Notorious Sock Knitters | January 26, 2008
By Amber

After the initial 1″ of K2, P2 rib, the pattern says to “Knit 1 round” (for size L).  I’m assuming that means actually knit all stitches, not work one more round of K2, P2.  Is that right?

  • Edited by Blog Mom Alice The following was going to be lost in a different post. I’m hoping Amber won’t mind and that Jennifer gets her answer.
  • Next question from Jennifer West:Can someone else who has a size 9 foot advise what size they might knit in this pattern? I’m trying to decide and thought I’d ask for advise. Thanks

Correct! At least that’s what I do when encountering that direction in sock patterns. Happy Knitting, Alice

PS I have no answer for Jennifer’s question so I’m hoping someone else will.

Thanks, Alice! On the down side, I just had to frog the whole thing because I can’t count and the stitches are too tiny for me to pick up. It was working up so beautifully, too.

Jennifer,

I have size 9 1/2 feet, very narrow. Usually, size small fits really well, it’s just a little longer than usual for a small. Unfortuantely, I almost always convince myself that size 9+ feet shouldn’t be in size small socks and I knit the medium - which is OK too but can get a little loose after they’ve been on the feet for a while. I like to use an option that is 60 stitches - the Jan. kit is either 55 or 66. Once again, I’m going to go with the 66, but this time I’m going to make a few decreases in the bottom of the foot and take it down a little smaller so I have about a size small+ for the foot. Might work!

I’m size 9.5, medium foot width. I’m going to do size large, but at a slightly tighter gauge.

My while my feet are size 10, I use the same strategy as Chrissie. Nothing sends me over the edge like loose fitting socks. Because my calves are (and never really were) as narrow as my heel, I use a larger needle for the leg, and switch to the nexr smaller size for the heel.

If you are a 2 circs knitter, Cat Bordi recommends a larger needle for the instep/top of foot and a smaller needle for the bottom. You can find her detailed explanation in “Socks Soar on Circular Needles”.

I wear a 9 regular, and I typically knit a sock in size medium. The widest part of my foot is 8.5 inches, so I stick with the size that will give me an 8″ circumference (does this make sense?)–I don’t have the pattern in front of me, but my recollection is that when I skimmed the pattern, I was going to make the medium.

I’m a 9.5 medium width and am also going to do the large in a size smaller. We’ll see how it goes. I’m not so concerned about the striping - just the size.

looks like knitters are the independent individuals I always suspected they were. We’ve got votes for every size so it all depends on how tightly you knit and what size needle you use. Good luck Jennifer, Alice
Amber - I’m sorry you had to visit the pond (as in frogging) but you know you want to be happy with your socks. I’m actually thinking about ponding a whole sock because while the foot fits the ankle is too loose. Oh the joys of socks. Alice

hi jennifer;

when knitting socks, it is best to knit the size closest to the circumference of the ball of your foot/ankle. it doesn’t matter if your foot is 12″ long, if your circumference measures 9″, you will probably still want to knit the medium size sock. you will just knit the foot to match your foot length.

as it as been mentioned, most people like the sock to fit snug so you want to knit the sock 10-20% smaller than your foot measurement.
