What do I do with the small little wrapped extra yarn. Is that to be used to knit the gauge?
I am confused where to measure on my foot and leg to figure out what size to make.

The little extra yarn is a mini-skein. Some folks dip into it if they run out of yarn. Some like me hoard the little skeins to keep as remembrances. I’d just use the main yarn for the gauge swatch myself.
As for measuring, usually one measures the foot circumference at the ball of the foot and the leg circumference at the point you want the sock to end height-wise. But I usually measure multiple places along the foot because a foot with a high instep might actually be bigger around closer to the leg than the ball of the foot. And too, if your leg is bigger around below the point at which you want the sock to end, you’d probably want to use that measurement.

I think the itsy bitsy skein will look great on my keychain.
Over in Ravelry there was a pic posted of someone who put ear wires on her skeins for coordinating, if not matching earrings.
I carried mine on my keychain for awhile last year until I lost one - fell right off. I was very sad.
Some them were looser than others - just be careful!
Now I just keep them as remembrances - up on the corkboard in my craft room.
I am a new member and am not sure if I use double pointed needles or can I use two circular needles for the first sock pattern?
For Pat… They don’t recommend any type (circ or dp) or how many. It’s just personal preference. I used 4 dps, but could see that this would be easy on 2 circs too - for the future, check to see how the pattern stitch is formed to help you decide if it’s easily divisible into two halves for circular needles.
Pat, I knit my socks two at a time on one 40″ circular needle. Use whatever method works best for you.
I always keep my emergency skeins on the top ring of my RSC binder. Though I may take them out and display them in another way some time.
Pat - I’m also a new sock club member, and a relatively new sock knitter. But, one thing I’ve found out is that I much prefer to knit with the Magic Loop method over dpn’s (though dpn’s are a fun challenge, sometimes, I just keep dropping them on the floor). I’m hoping to do this first pair of RSC socks two at a time on one circular needle because I want the two socks to match. Silly me. And that’s the best way I can think of, with my limited skills, to make that happen.
ann- you might have a problem manipulating the stitches when you get to the heel. you can still use 2son1c up to the heel but will need to have an extra set of needles to separate the socks at this point; unless you plan on using 50% of the sts for the short row heel.
