Notorious Sock Knitters | January 27, 2008
I’m at the heel and I’m knitting a medium, which is 66 stitches or 6 repeats. So, the directions for the heel say that I should be working back and fourth over 39 stitches for a medium…is that right? It seems like I should be working over 33 stitches but that’s for the small? How do I center the stitches? From the picture it looks like a point should be the center-back of the heel, but then I have to take an odd number of stitches from either side and it will interrupt the pattern repeat on the top of the sock…Am I just being dumb or whut? HELP

I haven’t started mine yet, but I sent an SOS up for you at the Ravelry group to run over here to help you! When I read through the heel directions, the small looked fine to me, but medium and large seemed different than what I’ve seen before. Hope someone clears it up for you soon!
Thanks! I’m such a dork that I forgot about Ravelry!! I hope this doesn’t mean that I have to give back my beta shirt
Some people here may not have joined Ravelry yet, so I wish the Ravelry group questions would be posed here, too! As of now, there seems to be confusion over the heel, so you’re not alone.
Hi,
I am at the same point as you in the medium and have the same thoughts and questions. I am thinking of going forward with 33 stitches (and keeping the pattern as established) as it makes sense to me though it is likely I missed something… I will try the Ravelry site as well. Please share any information you may find as I am new to the club and Ravelry.
Thank you!
I had problems too! The heel is a bit deeper to center it. Are you knitting on dpns or circs? I am knitting on circs so I am knitting the 35sts and then adding 3 sts from each side of the other circ so you have 39 but it’s still centered. I got help on Ravelry in about 5 minutes. Try that next time.
Thank you
I will gladly take your information and advice. I am knitting on 4 DPNs and need to study this for a bit. Wish me luck!
Much Good luck to you. 3 stitches from the instep dp needle end closest to the heel on each side should keep you centered and give you 39 stitches for the heel. Happy Knitting, Alice
I’m having a few problems with the heel as well. I have gaps between the wrapped stitches before I turn to purl back across the row. Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening? I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Beginning of the RS row is fine- no gaps nice and snug.
Hi guys, Samantha has got it right and it is a deep heel and might take a little more work but feels quite wonderful.
Designer and test knitter will chime in tomorrow. I would attempt more detail but have been ill all day and am pretty sure would just muddy things instead of clarify.
I knit with the 33 stitches and everything has turned out fine. I was knitting on dpns…
Kati- I have to remember to skootch the stitches closer together on the purl side, like I’m trying to get the stitches on the left and right needle to touch when I purl that first stitch back and then tighten the second purl stitch too, just to seal the deal hth…
Alice and Samantha (and Tina)-I wish I’d thought of that
Good Luck Heather!
Sock heel newbie, here. Would short-wrapping on the purl stitch (as in combined knitting) help with the gaps? Haven’t looked that far into the pattern yet, so it may not be feasible…
Thank you all for your kind words and wisdom. I followed Samantha’s and Alice’s advice (39 st for the medium heel as the pattern states)and am nearing the end of the heel. I think the wording (opposite 3 repeats) may have confused me a bit and led me to think I should do the heel on 33 st instead of the 39 per pattern. SO far so good…
Kati, I am not sure about the gaps. I have some space between mine because of the wrap… I’ll have to look at mine and think about it.
Tina, please take care and feel better
Like Kati, I’ve been brought the heel by a side with lovely little bonus “holes”. The opposite side looks as it should and I love the faux single purl detail. The frog is coming.
I was wondering if wrapping the opposite direction on the “hole-y” side would be helpful? I’m already pulling pretty hard.
I’m prepared to fiddle, but if someone else already has….
I think I figured out my gap problems. I used these tutorials and did a stnd short row heel which results in leaving the wraps “live” unlike in the pattern - but no gaps. http://misocrafty.squarespace.com/journal/2006/9/21/short-row-heel-tutorial.html and http://www.cosmicpluto.com/blog/?p=585
Hi, all. This is JC, Blue Moon’s tech editor. Sorry for any confusion, but yes, the pattern does mean it when it says to work the heel over 33 (39, 43) sts. Adrienne chose those numbers because they’re 60% of the total stitch count. This rule of thumb is pretty common for short-row heels: it gives the heel a bit more room than working over just 50% of the stitches.
Do you have to work your heels over 60% of the total sts? No, of course not. If you find that 50% works better for your feet, then do it!

I finished first sock last night… the directions are correct and the sock fits nicely.
