General Knitting Questions | January 28, 2008
I am DEFINITELY a lazy swatcher. I knit like crazy… and start and restart and restart again. I seem to feel the risk that I will get it the first time without swatching is worth it…evidently. My size 1 needles are 2.5 (not 2.25) I am a women’s 9 and am making the size small sock. Anybody else have this combo?

Do you have an idea of how many stitches you get to the inch knitting with 2.5 mm US 1s? I know with that size needle I usually get 8 sts/inch. If you’ve got STR socks you’ve knit with this size needle before, you may just want to grab one and measure your gauge on it.
Yes, 8st/in. Seems to be working out fine. Started the mediums 2x and 66 st was way too big. Perhaps the pattern runs large, or I knit loose. As Tina says, gauge, gauge, gauge!
I got 8 sts per inch too on my size 1’s, don’t have any 0’s and I have had flu so not going to get any o’s cause I can’t wait to get started. I am jost going for it–they will fit someone. Leslie M
Interesting - I am also a size 9 shoe and I knit the mediums on size 2 needles. Just do what works best for you!
the gauge for this pattern is 8.5 sts/inch so if you are getting 8 sts/inch, the sock will be bigger. that little 0.5 st makes a big difference with 66 sts. everything is about gauge and the needle size you need to get gauge. everyone will use a different size needle for the same gauge.
at 8 sts/inch: 66 sts is 8 1/4″
at 8.5 sts/inch: 66 sts is 7 3/4″
I’m concerned that I won’t have enough yarn for the second sock. I’m knitting on 2.25mm/Size 1 stitches for a size 8.5 foot. I’m getting the 8 stitches per inch on the stockinette (sole of foot), but when I measured the lace sections, I’m getting 9 stitches per inch. Should I go down a size in needles to 2.0mm/0? I’d hate to, since I’m nearly finished with the first sock. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
Packerbelle you should have enough yarn I would think. How are you counting the YO’s in the lace section? That would seriously affect your “gauge”. The stockinette section is usually what they use to check gauge so you should be fine with what you got in the lace section. I always have quite a bit of left over yarn and don’t often see posts saying folks have run out unless they have unusually large feet and then they already know they need more than one skein of STR or have another member with smaller feet send them their extra. Hope that helps. Happy Knitting, Alice
