Sizes question

January Kit Questions | January 28, 2008
By Sock Junkie

Hi all, I will begin knitting this months pattern soon. I am barely able to restrain myself but I am trying to finish decembers socks. Just curious about the sizes everyone who is ahead of me is getting. Are they running true to size or is the medium a big medium or the large a large large. Just Curious! Happy Knitting!!

Personally, I think the medium is pretty large. at 66 stitches, it’s at the outer edge of medium. I did about an inch or so of the pattern and decided the medium was going to be too big and frogged it last night. I’m going to start over and do the small, maybe on size 2.5 mm needles. I think that’ll be a wiser choice for me.

This is what I did! What size shoes do you wear? I am a 9. The 66 stitches were too wide. I am making small on 2.5 and they are perfect.

I’m working the size large on 2.25 needles b/c I have larger calves. They definitely seem to be on the large side of large. I’m either going to reduce the number of stitches or go down a needle size for the foot (I wear a 9.5).

I have big calves, so I’m doing a large and will drop down to a 0 for the foot. I have done this on other STR patterns with great results.

I usually do 72 stitches with fingering weight yarn on 2.25 mm needles, so I was going to do the large size sock. When I got into it though (my swatching in the round is just starting the sock…and ripping back if need be) I discovered that my gauge is much larger on STR lightweight than with other fingering weight yarn. I got the 34 st/4 in just fine, and decided to drop down to the medium size to avoid the sock being too large. I’m getting better striping with the medium size, too, so that’s a benefit.

Ann, I wear size 9 1/2 shoes, but AA narrow. I’m happier with a sock that doesn’t slide around on my foot, so smaller socks that are a bit snug are much more comfortable. It sounds odd to be knitting SMALL SOCKS for BIG OLD FEET, doesn’t it? :-)

Yes, Linda- I don’t think I’ve ever been size small anything! That is what freaked me out…that I must be doing something wrong- even though the numbers worked out. I like snug socks also. I ripped out a finished pair of Lorna’s Laces after wearing them for a day because they were too baggy.

the stitch pattern is pretty stretchy which is why the sock is knit at a slightly smaller gauge than usual. i think most people aim for 8 sts/inch.

I knit the 1″ cuff in the small size as stated in the pattern, but I could barely get it on over my heel (size US 8 1/2 shoe) and it was really stretched on the calf. Cast on again for medium size and with 2.5mm needle. Now I get pooling (front/back dark/light). But it gets on my foot. So I have just switched back to 2.25mm needle to see if that straightens out the pooling, but keeping with the medium size.

I’m so glad I found this discussion - I wear an 8 or 8.5 US size, but have a narrow foot (the absolutely ONLY thing about me that’s narrow) so this has helped me know that I’ll need to make that adjustment. Maybe a size small, just longer??

hi ann,

yes, measure the ball of your foot and your ankle and pick the size that is slightly smaller than your measurements. most people like their socks to fit snuggly. length has very little to do with picking which size to knit.

I had a terrible time with December’s sock. The sock seems to have been designed with no negative ease at all. I had to make an extra small size. Then, to make things even more interesting, Ms. Bordhi’s math did not work at all for the extra small size (I redid the math twice and then had a friend try and it still came out wrong). My sock ended up being 1/2 inch too short. So, I measured the gusset and heel section, reasoning that the number I got there would be a constant and then subtracted it from the length of my foot to figure out where to start the ferry wave pattern. The finished socks are lovely but the process was painful.

So glad to have found this thread. I have a small foot and usually knit STR lightweight with size 0 and 52-56 stitches. I am going to knit the small size, but will frog if it’s too big. I rarely get to try different patterns so I’m anxious to try this one out.
