General Knitting Questions | January 31, 2008
I have tried this cast on, but I am having trouble with tension. I can follow the instructions in Cat Bordhi’s book (pp. 23-24) but by the time I am on my 10th loop the needles drawing are so close together that I can barely slip the yarn between them. Does anyone have a clue as to how to keep myself from this degree of tension?

If your using two circulars for the cast on, then you can slip the stitches towards, or onto the cable, which should ease tension on the needles. You may find that it also helps to offset the top and bottom needles, one needle tip sticking further out than the other. If your using double points for the cast on, you still might try slipping the stitches further back on the needles as you go, but I would suggest 2 Circs or Magic Loop method, it makes knitting the first and second round easier when you can transfer the stitches on hold to the cable portion of your needle.
Hope this Helps.
Check out Cat Bordhi’s You Tube videos. Watching someone else sometimes helps me get a little better grip, pun intended, on the subject. Have fun…

I have started holding my needles a little further apart when I do the cast on. It took a minute to get used to it, but once I did, I no longer had any problems with the stitches being too tight.
I also hold my needles a bit further apart. I actually was just casting on stitches via this method and it looks a bit like a V. Holding the needles like this allows me to slip the yarn on. I also slip my stitches further down the needles and down onto the cables (I knit with two circulars). As the number of stitches increases doing this does seem to help decrease the tension.
