General Knitting Questions, January Kit Questions | February 01, 2008
i knit with 2 circular needles and have knit many pairs but i am stumped on this heel pattern. i don’t “recognize” it as heel construction. There is not standard heel flap then decreasing and then gusset. i am working the large size so i have 36 stiches on each circular needle… but the pattern calls for 43 stitches. My lace pattern is automatically centered because ALL my heel stitches are on one need and ALL the instep stitches are on the other. Help… i am sooo confused.

It is a short row heel, which has more of an “hourglass” construction than a traditional heel flap and gusset. It’s pretty cool, but I am also knitting the larger size and am not getting the correct stitch count at the end. I wonder if there may be an error in the pattern? I’m going to try to make contact with the designer or Tina or somebody to see if anyone else is having trouble with it.
I suppose when it doubt we could just knit a traditional heel flap and gusset in stockinette, and keep those 36 stitches for the pattern on the instep.
Hi Chaya and Carolyn,
I just came from KNIT HELP categories under Heel Help by Erin Martin dated Jan 30th with 21 comments. The designer herself wrote answers to the heel question and they have helped me. You might try to go there. I hope it will help you both. Now to go and try it for myself. Good Luck. Robin
there is also a post titled “heel trouble” dated jan 27th. there is some more comments there which might help.
You need to take three stitches from each side of the other needle to get the correct stitch count. You’ll have to move those stitches over as you are knitting. This is what I did to make it work…( I did two circs, too)
Knit across all stitches on needle one. Move three stitches from needle two to needle one. Knit the first two stitches, wrap and turn on the second. Turn work, purl back across to the end of needle one. Move three stitches from needle two to needle one. Knit two stitches, w&t on the third. Now you’ll have 42 stitches on needle one and 30 stitches on needle two.
Thanks Chrissie… so 42 stitches is okay instead of the 43 stitches the pattern calls for???? i haven’t ever done this type of heel… i am quite excited though!!! Just for clarification… the “w&t” stitch is the last stitch on the needle each row????
chaya
you should be using 43 sts for the heel with 29 sts resting…if you are knitting the large. if you blindly following the instructions as far as how many to knit then w&t, you will be fine. you are “borrowing” some sts from the instep for the heel. these will be returned when you finish the heel.
I am having touble understanding the short row heel. I have done short rows before and this is a little different. On row 5 when you say allow wrap to remain, does it mean I do not knit the wrap with the stitch? Are all the wraps single wraps until after row 5? This is my first year as a club member and I am enjoying learning a new heel but right now I feel like a new knitter and will never get this new heel.
hi pat
you will not be knitting any of the wrapped sts in this heel;

unless that is your preference. it’s always “knitter’s choice”!
Thanks for the answer on knitting wraps or not. I know this must be a dumb question but are all the warps single until after row 5 and is the wrap done on the stitch before the last wrapped stitch. I will do this short row heel!
the sts are single wrapped until row 5; which then starts the second part of the heel. the sts will then be double wrapped. i am not quite understanding the last part of your question. maybe get to the end of the heel and see if you still have a problem with the instructions.
I FINISHED THE HEEL AND IT LOOKS GREAT! Now I started the foot and the numbers do not work. The pattern says K 36 pm and work 33 st in lace pattern (making medium). I have 66! I think it is just a miss print so I will continue with the 66. Thanks
hi pat
yes, you should have 66 sts total for the medium. you will be rearranging the sts you “borrowed” to do the heel and returning them to the instep. this last “k36, pm, work 33 sts in lace, pm” will recenter the instep lace over the foot.
Thanks for all your help. I am almost finished with the first sock. It looks large but when I try it on, it feels really good. I just wish it had stripes instead of pools. It is striping better in the foot than in the leg. I have never had this happen with other socks that stripe. Oh well next time. Thanks again.
Thanks for all your comments - Who would know to “borrow” stitches from the resting needle?? Now it makes some sense. Thank you!…..Getting There….
