All done! January

January Kit Questions | February 02, 2008
By KillerHamster

The socks are finished and I’ll have pics up on Ravelry on Sunday. This pattern really caught my imagination, which is why they were finished as quickly as they were. I made the largest size and had 10 grams of yarn left over. I’m looking forward to the March shipment. Can it please be March now?

This should go without saying, but don’t go to these pages if you don’t want spoilers please. You will see photos of wips and fos.

I was having problems finding the Serendipity projects page on ravelry, so now that I have here it is:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/serendipity/people

I just finished the small yesterday on the way to a wedding, and I have tons of yarn left. (I’m on ravelry as thingwhatsqueeks) My mind is reeling with the potential uses, but for now I’m just going to set it to the side while I ponder.

It’s so wonderful that so many of you can also see pictures on Ravelry but there are others, like me, that do not have access. There are currently almost 8000 people waiting to get onto Ravelry so I cannot imagine I will get on soon. I’d love to see the pictures of your finished socks. Is there a way to post them on this blog?

Please don’t post photos yet. There are still international members waiting to receive their kits because everything shipped at the same time this first time out. If you want to share your finished projects (and lots of knitters would like that) please post a LINK to a photo sharing website like Flickr. That way those who have avoided spoilage up till now can continue to dream about what might be. True there have been lots of comments mentioning colors and needle size questions and pattern questions but those aren’t quite the same as a photo. I’ll ask Tina when she thinks we can have an “all clear” for posting finished projects. Hopefully it will be soon. Thanks for everyone’s understanding and patience on this. Happy knitting and congratulations on finishing your socks. Alice

I finished mine yesterday in size large.I think they will make great valentine’s day socks in these colors plus the lace pattern could be the flames of passion! I wonder if the lace pattern in a green colorway would look like leaves. I had never done this type of heel or toe although I have made dozens of socks, mostly for my son. He is a distance runner who swears by home made socks for running comfort. This is my first year in the club and I’m really enjoying it. Knit on! Mary

For Nicole - I put my name up for ravelry in mid-January - and got on before the end… Probably about 2 weeks wait. The numbers seemed overwhelming to me also, but I think that it probably won’t be more than a month for you. I never look at the blogs until I’m done, I like the solitary work in progress and then enjoy seeing other’s finished products along side mine.

I can’t believe people are done with their socks already! I haven’t even cast on!!! I did dutifully plow through 2 WIPs this weekend though just so I could have less cast on guilt hehe, I’ll probably cast on today maybe… although I have a new cousin set to come into the world today and several pieces to whip out for her as of yet… hrm. To cast on or not cast on…

I finished the first sock last night during the Super Bowl… does that count? Too busy today to cast on for the second, though.

I’m done!!!!!!! Happy happy happy! Finished sock #2 last night and of course put them both on to admire them! Am waiting to wear them until this weekend when I go to see my sister so she can admire them :)

I really liked the toe and I love short row heels. The only problem I had was with depth of the heel. The next time I use this pattern I won’t go to 9 stitches, but will stop at 11 before increasing.

I’m jealous! I still have two baby projects to finish before I can start my socks. Is anyone using 2.5mm needles which is what I have? Should I just make a smaller size if I use them?
My arthritis doesn’t like too small needles.

I got my packet yesterday and casted on immediately, my socks are not striping or pooling they are spiraling. I’m knitting size m and my gauge is the same than in pattern (I’m using smaller needles (US00) because I tend to knit loosely). I’m going to make another type of heel for these socks because normally short row heel doesn’t fit well for my high arched feet.

Now I’m going to continue knitting, I want to finish these socks as soon as possible.

to Mary Hine - I’m doing them in a springy green and they DO look very leafy. I’m half way done so it will be about a week before pics! Then I’m going to use the yarn for the Here There Be Dragon socks. 2 pairs from one kit - woohoo!

Cast on Jan. 28 and finished 1am Feb.6. Just in time for the Lunar New Year!!

I have a size 9 foot but it’s narrow. I modified the pattern and knit 3 repeats on the leg in a size 1 (2.25 mm) needle because I like longer socks. I used the size small directions for the heel because mine is very narrow. I also switched to a size 0 (2.0mm) needle for the heel and the bottom of the foot for a tighter fit. I didn’t run out of yarn and have plenty left over for darning. The fit is great with the modifications that I made.

Finished mine today after a brief stop in the land of strep throat and pink eye YUCK! Those darn preschoolers give me such lovely gifts. I love the socks although my guage must have changed a smidge after my break, I got a little pooling on the foot portion of the second sock. They are amazing and my daughters are begging to wear them for valentines day but the belong to mama!

Success! I finished this pair unusually fast - thanks to the well-written pattern and beautiful colors that kept me going.

Living overseas, with no English-speaking yarn store, I’ve not had great success ordering yarns online and matching it to an appropriate pattern. I just cannot say how thrilled I am to cast-on and, with just a few minor adjustments, complete a perfectly fitting pair of socks!

In case this helps anyone: With my large calves (28cm at top of sock), I made Large size on 2.0mm needles. I agree the heel was a bit deep and will stop next time at 11 sts. On the sole I decreased to 66 sts, finished off size 9.5/10 with 14g left-over yarn.

Tina & Adrienne - thank you so much!

So close..yet not finished. Last week I had a toothache and had to take a day off cause of the drugs. However, this was timely. I had just received my yarn. Today, I was doing the heel on the second sock and i was eager to speed it along. I had high hopes of wearing them on Friday. Then, I went to lunch with dream of finishing the heel. But it wasn’t to be. I cut my finger opening a can. I was rushed to the doctor. After bleeding for over 1 hour 15 min, I was told my finger would need to be immobilized for a week. WHAT?? No knitting!! What an outrage! I starting to have thoughts that my index finger is not really necessary. I will have to try but the throbbing may prevent it. OR maybe I can try some leftover drugs from the dentist. If the wound starts to bleed again, it may be camouflaged by the colourway. Anyway, only time will see how long it takes.

OK, OK…. I know that I’m too Attention deficit to sit down and just knit two whole socks. So I have the both legs of the socks done…. and well… I just have to get a sweater done for my nephew’s birthday on March 21st. So I’m taking a little break. The sweater is a quick knit (raglan shaping all-in-one, nice), but I do take the socks with me everywhere. I just have to sit in a quiet place to do the heels, and then it’s a race,(spoken like the sleepy, funny guy from the movie “Rat Race”), to the star toes. I will post pictures when I’m close. I get the best comments from my knitting friends on the color and the yarn though. Thank you!

I’ve finished the first, and am mostly done with the leg on the second (there was an emergency alternate project distraction in there). I’ll try to get updated photos up on Ravelry. I’m hoping to be done by the end of the weekend so I can wear them on Monday. This is the first short-row heel that I’ve done that I’m actually happy with, and I love the way the pattern looks in this colorway. Now I can’t wait for March.

I will be finished today…I only have the toe of the second sock to go, and I’m off of work. I’m making the medium for my size 9 feet, and I have plenty of yarn left over. They aren’t perfect…I have some “design features” in there (I forgot to do a couple rows of the lace on one of the repeats, for example), but I love these socks! They are sturdy and warm and I love the heel.

I’m all done with my Serendipity Sock. I love the color, and the pattern is very interesting. This was the first time I this type of heel and toe. The heel has given me some challenges, but I overcame them. Both the of the socks look great, except for one heel is a little larger than the otherone. They aren’t perfect, but I’m not ashamed to wear them out, and practice makes perfect. Thanks!

Finished on Saturday. Love them! I made a medium on size 0 DPNS. Had about 1 ounce of yarn left over so anyone who needs extra feel free to give me a shout. Best to find me on Ravelry with same username. Off to a good 2008 STR. Last year I only completed one of the six pair. I’m now finishing the April Grasshopper socks. Hoping to do two years of sock club in one! Good luck everyone in finishing your Serendipidies. They really are worth all of your hard work. Like Tina I have shunned red for most of my life. Redheads just have trouble with it. I must say it was a great pleasure to knit during this gloomy January and February.

I posted earlier about finishing the first sock… now I’m done with both. They’ll go up on the blog this evening, I think. I did one with the toe as written, but didn’t like how it fit me, so I worked a standard toe on the other and will go back and reknit the first one. If I were really anal, I’d go back and redo the heel a bit, too, to make it a little less deep.

So now I have to wait until March for the next one? Bummer.

One down, one to go. I have posted a picture on the Ravelry site. I used a merino/silk blend for the heel and toes,(’cause it soooo soft and strong on tender tooties) and spaced the 2×2 rib, doing a 1×1 instead. Doh!. Now I have the pattern in my head, and will whip through sock #2. WooHoo!

Well, if I could quit ripping! I am wondering if I dare try a size small and see if it will fit my size 9.5 foot? My socks are not striping or pooling, they are coiling, like a snake around the legs, and I am using 2.25 and I am getting gauge, so that’s not it… I really want the stripes for this one. I really want to finish, too, and stop starting over…. I don’t think that dropping down to 2.0 is going to make enough difference to stop the coils.

I’m another redhead, and avoided red for quite a while, then I got older and decided what the hey! and I get actual compliments when I wear reds (warm reds, anyway), so go figure… anything but orange! LOL

you can try any size you want…length has nothing to do with the width of the sock. there is no reason why you can’t try knitting a small with a 2.5 mm needle. try it and see if the sock fits and you get stripes. no rules.

On February 25th, 2008 at 1:22 pm Tara said:

Elaine,

You would be surprised who little it takes to move from a stripe to a coil to a stack. I played a lot with sizing on my first sock (big calves, tapered feet).

On US1, 84 st gave me broad stripes, 81st - narrow stripes, 78st - swirls, 75st - stacked, 72st - swirls in the opposite direction to the 78.

Like you, I liked the striping, so to maintain yet fit my feet, I settled on the 84st I needed for the calf and ribbed the bottom of the foot.

If 3 stitches makes that much difference, then I would suspect so would a needle size change.

Yippee! I finished my socks! I am really proud of the fact that I finished before the next package arrives! My second sock turned out kinda funky. After I did the heel, I had 5 more stitches than I was supposed to have. Those extra stitches caused amazing pooling! Fortunately, the pooling is on the foot part, which will be in my shoes most of the time. The cuff parts match perfectly! I plan on wearing them for the first time on Crazy Sock Day at my school.

I had some other emergency projects that I’m working on (a prayer shawl for a friend dying of brain cancer), but am down to the heel now on my sock. I’m a fairly new sock knitter–I knew the heel wasn’t what I’ve done before, so it’s really reassuring to know it’s a short-row heel. Mine are coming out in stripes, and I think they look gorgeous. I started the January shipment on March 3 and finished today, March 24, about five hours after the March shipment arrived. I’ve been working on the SOTS2 a lot, so hadn’t started earlier. I love the socks … I did a heel flap and short row heel turn … just couldn’t make the short row heels look right … only the first time I’ve tried them on top-down socks. Check the pic on my blog http://www.mamateja.blogspot.com, if the pic doesn’t show.

I finished my Dragon Socks on March 24, 2008. (The same day I received the March sock kit!) I call them Dragon Socks rather than Serendipities because there was nothing serendipitous about these socks for me. I started and restarted 3 times before I was able to get the gauge for the stripe pattern. I had to use size “000″ aka 1.5mm needles. There were times when I had to wear bandaids on my fingertips as “thimbles”. However, I took a several week break before starting the second sock and then I really enjoyed making that one. The pair of them are really lovely and were worth it! The pattern is very nice and I think the heel is my all-time favorite short-row heel! Thank you Adrienne Fong!
