Dye on my fingers

January Kit Questions | February 02, 2008
By Jana

Anyone else notice a red line on their fingers from the dye?  I have a little red line on my left index finger where I wrap the yarn around.  Also another stripe on my pinkie.  I knitted a lot yesterday, but my hands were dry and clean.  This is my first year in the club and my first experience with STR yarn.  I’m loving the yarn and the pattern, but I’m concerned that the colors might bleed?  Anyone else experiencing this?

I remember hearing that this happened to some poeple last year with Lenore/Raven. If you go to this link http://rockinsockclub.com/2007/10/29/lenore-is-bleeding/ it has all the responses about why this can happen and what to do about it.

This often happens with hand-dyed yarns. It’s just excess dye, and won’t really bleed (although in your first wash you may get a bit in the water).

Thanks for the link to last year’s comments. I’m glad not to worry about it. I’m so in love with STR now! Happy knitting!

Yeah, I’m getting that too. I wear it as a badge of honor. But then I don’t get overly worried about dye on my hands either.

Too funny - my red streak goes directly across my cuticle, so my index finger looks something of a bloody mess (literally). I did the wash with a vinegar rinse on the finished product to lock the bright colors better, meanwhile my cuticle is fading.

Every time I scroll through here and see dye on my fingers, I giggle.
Then what goes through my head is Dye on my fingers, dye on my nose. My hands are covered up to my elbows. I do not even know what color my tshirt was originally and my fingernails well GROSS1 Especially if the ravens are running through.

ok, thats all

I seem to recall reading somewhere that reds and pinks (which are light reds anyway) don’t “fix” as well as other colors. The result - pink t-shirts in the wash….red on your fingers….and I guarantee when you wash them, you’ll see some red, then, too.

I’ve had some luck with red socks with added a little white vinegar to the soaking water - not the best scent, but it helps a bit, if you’re particularly concerned with them.

But - yes, it’s not just you. The red just loves you, LOL!

I noticed a little red line on my index finger yesterday afternoon when I was knitting. It was faint, and just reminded me to wash the socks seperately the first time so as to not worry about turning any other socks pink. I’ll be sure to try the vinegar tip when I wash them the first time too.

I didn’t notice any dye on my fingers when I made my socks, but I did notice a pinkish cast to my shoes after I wore them the first time. I think I’m going to not throw them in my regular laundry, just to be safe.

There is some dye that does wear off on your finger. Not to worry, I have hand washed mine, good old Euclan and lukewarm water.
There was some dye that washed out, but I have worn the socks with no dye on my feets!

I had 2 red lines on my left index finger. This is the same finger that I slammed in a car door last month so the combination of the red lines and the black nail was very, um, “colorful”.
The hand-dyed yarns always bleed some when I wash then but its no big deal.
