General Knitting Questions | February 03, 2008
I made the size large on size 1US DPNs. I wear a size 7.5-8 shoe… when making a sock, are you supposed to make them a bit small, so that when you block them they stretch out a bit? I finished my first sock, and the heel pooks out a bit, it’s a bit loose all over, and I haven’t blocked it yet… little lost (eep).

You want your sock to have a bit of “negative” ease that is it should need to stretch out somewhat to fit your foot. You don’t want it cramping your toes but it shouldn’t be loose to start with. JMO but you might want to think about going down a pattern size. I wear a size 7.5 and plan to knit the medium. Know others will be responding so Happy Knitting, Alice
Remember that with socks, the length (shoe size)determines how long you make the foot (between the heel and toes) not the number you cast on. I knit 3 pairs that didn’t fit me before I got this lesson well learned. Measure around your foot at ball and instep and choose the cast on size from those numbers. I wear size 9 shoes, but have narrow feet (AAA) and the widest part of my foot is my instep at 8 inches around. I am using size 0 needles and size med of the pattern. I just finished the cuff and it looks comparable to other well fitting socks I’ve done, but I have only knit 2 rounds of the lace, so we’ll see if I choose correctly….Great job already finishing a sock!
there is a wonderful discussion about sizing and measuring from 1-26. the thread is called “2 questions before i start”. it is currently on page 11 but that is always subject to change
if your sock is “a bit too loose all over”, my suggestion (painful as it might be, but then you have the pleasure of knitting your str again) is to frog your sock, measure your foot, and start over with the correct size. i find that str blooms (loosens up) with washing so your current sock may be looser than you really want. i like my socks to fit snuggly.
the important measurements for choosing size is the circumference of calf, ankle, and ball of foot.
I just finished my first sock knitted on size 1 DPNs. I have a size 8 foot that is regular width. I have been told that I knit very tightly. My sock fits perfect. Maybe you should go down a size if you don’t knit tightly and you have narrow feet.
I haven’t started my socks yet, but after reading the pattern, are they knit on 2 circulars/1 magic loop? I’ve never knit socks that way, I was planning on using DPNs. Can this be done? How many needles? 3 or 4? Thanks for your help!

you knit the socks with whatever needles you are comfortable with. that is one reason why the pattern is so “generic”.
I’m almost finished with the 1st sock and almost to the heel of the 2nd sock. I knit both socks “in tandem” on DPNs (I knit them at the same time, but on separate sets of ndls). I usually knit to gauge using the recommended needles, but for some reason it wasn’t really happening with this sock. That, coupled with the fact that the colors were pooling instead of striping, I wasn’t a happy Rockin Socker. So, I frogged and started again using US0 and the medium size. I also modified my heel and did the “small” size heel (33 sts).
I am so in love with this pattern and this colorway. Thanks to all involved for starting this RSC year with a bang! Lovin It!!!
Ok, round two. I have both my legs knit. I’m knitting my heels with a different yarn, so I gauged that yarn on the needles I am using on the legs to make sure it was the same. I’m “getting” the pattern so I don’t think I’m misreading, but when I get done with the heel there is a pretty big “pookiness” that is where the heel “turns” and the heel seems reeeeally deep. So if I didn’ the heel on fewer stitches, (I’m doing the large size so my total stitches is 72. I usually do my heels on half my total stitches, i.e. 36 st)d’ya think this would take care of that pookiness. It would be like doing a smaller heel on the larger sock.
Thanks for your consideration.

hi meg
you can either stop the heel with more unwrapped sts which would make the heel less deep or less “pookie” (interesting word
) or frog and use 36 sts for the heel which would also make a shallower heel.
there are a couple of more threads further back about the heel.
Well,
After reading the other posts on this subject I think that I’m going to frog both socks and start over on a smaller size. I did the smaller heel on the 36 stitches, and it’s still pookie.. I think also, I”m going to go down to 0’s for needle size. Even the gauge was right on, my sock seemed a little (another one of my descriptives here) schloopy- you know, like cooked spaghetti?.
I’m not horribly distressed. I have the flu and some good movies without subtitles to watch so I’m set for the weekend.
Thanks for your input. Have a good weekend
Meg
