Notorious Sock Knitters | February 03, 2008
Just finished! Not only is this my first sock club sock, this is my first sock *ever*… and it fits!! I’m so thrilled. The star toe is great (despite my loathing of k2tog) and I love the short row heel because there is little I hate more in knitting than picking up stitches (maybe k2tog… maybe :)). I made the large on US 0 needles. The only thing I would have changed is that I would have stopped two rows sooner on the short row heel before working back out again (so leaving 11 unwrapped stitches in the center instead of 9). The heel was just very slightly too deep for me - but so slight that it doesn’t even bother my picky feet. Thanks to the designer for such a lovely, fabulous, sock-newbie-friendly pattern. It’s awesome to start off sock knitting with a bang like this!

Amber–
I just started my first sock this afternoon but am also knitting with size 0 [2mm] to make the large size. What size shoe do you wear? I’m a 10.
I’m curious what your gauge was? The best I can do is 7sts per inch instead of the 8.5sts per inch the pattern calls for.
I’m just going for it and hoping it will come out correct fit!
This is my first sock club and first sock attempt too!
Congrats on being done already!
Teresa - I’m a 9.5 - 10 (10 in running shoes, 9.5 everything else). I was a little concerned about the large being too big because I was about 1/2 stitch under gauge (so about 8 sts per inch rather than 8.5). I decided to start decreasing the toe a little earlier than the pattern calls for - at about 2″ instead of 1-3/4″. Might be something to try for you, too, if you’re at 7 sts per inch.
Good luck! I still have another sock to do!
i am a size 11 and proud of it(size 10 until those twins came along!) so I have done a number one and large–we shall see. i am doing two at a time so will know soon..
I am working on size 0 as well - and am still a bit over guage! So rather than knitting a large for my size 9 feets, I am working on the medium size. I just finished the heel and tried the sock on - looks good on the calf but I find the heel a wee bit long. I am going to knit half the foot then try again - if it is still too long I will take the heel back until I have 11 unwrapped stitches and try that!
hi teresa
7 sts/inch is kind of a loose gauge for socks knit with str lightwt. the problem, in the long run, is wear. you may find that your socks will not wear as long as a pair knit with a gauge of 8sts+/inch.
what size needles are you using? and what is your knitting style? you might be able to “tighten” up your gauge by knitting closer to the tips of your needles. i would hate for you to spend your time knitting with this beautiful yarn, only to have you not be able to enjoy wearing them for the longest time possible.
hi amber,
i am thrilled that you’re thrilled. looking forward to seeing your finished pair! here’s to MORE sock knitting!
i am proud to be your “first” sock!
I actually put my first sock on hold (a universal toe up) in order to cast on and start doing this pair as my first sock instead because I just couldn’t wait to play with the yarn and pattern. One thing that I’m concerned about is fit. I’m making the large size on 1s. My width and length are good to go for the large size… I’m just worried about my fat ankles and calves. Oh well. I’ll just gift them to my mom who loves all things dragon if they don’t fit me.
I can tell by what other people are saying and by the pics that the heal is going to be too deep and I don’t want it to turn out pointy. Most people are doing 11 left in the center on the wrapping instead of 9 to correct this, is that right?
Also, are there any good resources you can point me to.. I have used DPNs multiple times for hats etc and so that is what I started my first sock on but I’d like to see if its faster for me to do it on 2 needles or magic loop but I don’t know how exactly it works.
you can leave as many sts unwrapped as fits your fit. there are several tutorials on magic loop if you google around.
Adrienne,
I am just now reviewing messages on the blog and saw that on Feb 4th you asked me a direct question about my needle size..I am so sorry for not noticing your question!
I have finished my first sock…using the smallest needle I own size 0 [2mm] addi turbo doing magic loop and following size medium…my ravelry name is momtonineknits…i posted pics there
Anyhow..it’s a little “pooky” in the heel and the toe is indeed too long…so am thinking through a few tweaks needed on my second sock as well as thinking of following the small size since I knit loosely.
Further suggestions? and I promise I will check back for an answer before starting my second sock
Thanks Adrienne!!
