General Knitting Questions, Notorious Sock Knitters | February 04, 2008
I got the first sock about 3/4 completed in size small and decided that I wanted it longer and a bit bigger so I decided to make a medium. Here is the problem. In the small the pattern striped beautifully but in the medium it wants to pool. Same needles, same knitter so same tension. Any ideas?

Adding stitches to make the sock larger (around) changes the distribution of color. Say you have a section of red in the yarn that goes for 10 inches. In a small, the circumference of the sock is such that 10 inches of red wraps perfectly around your sock when knit up - one nice little stripe. Then, the circumference of the sock becomes greater when you move to a medium, and that 10 inches of red, when knit up, doesn’t quite go all the way around your sock anymore, so now there’s a section that’s, say, pink instead of a red stripe. And now - you have pooling.
A little bit non-technical, but I hope that helps you a bit!
alas, a different number of stitches and a different amount of yarn to complete a round. there is a thread about this back around jan 26th or 27th? you might need to change your gauge by knitting a tad tighter or looser…or changing the needle size. i knit the original sock as a medium with a gauge of 8.5 sts/inch in stockinette. what gauge are you getting?
Would starting at a different point in the color repeat make a difference?
Actually it has started striping but they are larger stripes. Looks nice.
I’d go down a needle size, but I guess it is working out for you now!
