STR vs. Koigu KPPPM Gauge

Notorious Sock Knitters | February 11, 2008
By Marlene

Hi -

I’ve knit a lot of socks on US 1 needles with Koigu KPPPM.  I know that a 56-stitch sock is a bit snug and a 64-stitch sock is about right. How does Koigu compare to STR? If it’s comparable, I will probably knit the medium size sock.

Having said that, I don’t know if a 64-stitch sock with a plain 2×2 ribbed cuff is really comparable to the pattern in the kit.

I realize I should bite the bullet and do a gauge swatch, but if I can just extrapolate from previous sock knitting, that would be nice!

Any input on this?

 Thanks,

Marlene

Sorry, Marlene! I think you need to swatch!-lol! Actually, what gauge were you getting with your KPPPM? I find that the KPPPM is definitely not as tightly spun as STR, so it “smooshes” up more easily. I’m inclined to tell you that I think you will be alright with the STR on the same needles, but you really don’t know until you knit it!

Actually, with socks I don’t swatch, since a good swatch is already 1/2 a sock-I just start knitting the sock and then if it isn’t working out, then it becomes the ’swatch’ which I frog and then I start the sock, changing needle size accordingly.

Yeah, I wasn’t much help, huh? ;)

Tina and Adrienne want us to swatch but I’m in the start the knitting as the swatch camp. I have found that unless something really strange is happening in the pattern then the size that casts on closest to ≤64 is probably the size that will fit me. I tend to knit with 2.0-2.5mm/0-1.5 US. That’s with just about every sock yarn. I did go down to 000 for Inside Out and think I went up to 2 for the cables. (Even then they’re a bit tight to get on.) From now on I’m going to be using those pages included in the first kit to help me track my sock knitting. Hey, it’s supposed to be fun, right? Short answer is I think Koigu and STR Lt&Med wt are fairly close in how they knit up for me. Happy Knitting, Alice

(secret-don’t tell) adrienne doesn’t swatch for socks either…hush! it’s a secret, ok? 8)

actually, someone on ravelry has knit a pair of “serendipity” with koigu. she knit a medium using us 1 (2.25mm) needles but does not say what gauge she got. if you are on ravelry, her id is allpurledup.

i may not swatch but i do take into consideration the gauge given for the pattern and will make my needle guess and sock size to knit from that info.

Hi! allpurledup here. I just measured my serendipity’s with koigu and then a pair of medium and lightweight socks from last years club. Over 4 inches I got koigu = 30, medium weight = 29.5 and lightweight = 31….all on 1’s (2.25). Both STR pairs feel more dense but the gauges are practically the same. Hope that’s helpful. I’m off to work on Here There Be Dragons Dancing socks!

I am a also a proponent of the VBS (Very Big Swatch), i.e. start knitting and see what happens. Once you have knitted with STR a few times you will have an idea of what works for you. My feet are about 8 1/2″ around and the medium always works for me. I knit lightweight on #1 and mediumweight on #2 needles. I usually want a stitch count around 64 for light and 56 or so for medium. I think I’m a tight knitter, but my gauge is the same as Tapmouse’s and she thinks she’s a loose knitter. Who knows.

Well thank you all so much for your replies, and especially for not yelling at me about trying to weasel out of swatching!

I did some more measurements of my foot and I definitely am squarely in the Medium range, so 64 stitches on #1 needles will be it!

Just so you don’t think I’m completely undisciplined…I am NOT going to start the Dargon socks until I finish the pair that were my “airplane knitting” socks from my August vacation. One more toe shaping and then two toe grafts to go - today’s the day.

Go Marlene! Three cheers for the foot/leg swatch. That last toe will go quickly and you’ll be knitting our amazing red. The lace patterns makes them seem to go quickly. Enjoy!

I do the sock as the swatch too, because knitting in the round is not the same as flat, like you’d swatch.
