Longest Sock…let’s make it so!

Notorious Sock Knitters | February 15, 2008
By Leslie

OK, I think I got the ok from Tina…but at any rate, Tan has offered up one of her mill ends to start this up and I have offered to get this thing off the ground! There are a couple of ideas running around in my mind, so I don’t really want to set too many specifics to this, yet. Of course, if someone wants to add ideas, please do so. I may just ‘let it happen’!-lol!Oh, and not only has Tan offered up her mill end, she has graciously offered to start the toe on our Rockin’ Sock Club Longest Sock Feat-or shall I say, “feet”! (har har…I’m not good at punniness, but that was my lame attempt!)So Tan will start this off and send to me. Remember Tina’s dream she wrote of in her first Dyer’s Notes of this year about the longest sock being knit by many different club members? She said each person did six rows each. In keeping with that, I would like to ask that each person knit six rows, then pass it on so that we can keep it going.I think the easiest would be to pass it on to the closest participant you can actually hand it off to before offering it up to mail out.I am also thinking about how to track/log this, but it may get to be too much. We can make the attempt anyway. Details will come as this unravels…or should I say ‘knits’ up?I’ll keep you all posted as to how this will unfold.

Just be sure that the “flyover” states aren’t left out just because you can’t pass it from hand to hand as easily. I’ve been known to drive to Minneapolis/St. Paul to see/hear Yarn Harlot so I would be willing to drive across the state to pick up the project in Omaha and then see that it gets passed on to someone in Illinois after making the rounds in Eastern Iowa. Good luck with this and Happy Knitting, Alice

Don’t worry about it, guys! I’m not relying entirely on hand-passing stuff! So far, what I’m thinking is that once I pass mine around to my nearby buds I could post that it is ready to go out. Then, anyone interested can post here and I formulate a list of the first 3-5 respondents, putting them in geographical order of sorts(say, everyone gets maybe a week MAXIMUM to keep the sock), then maybe they would contact me with their progress and I would post that it is available to move on and based on the next 3-5 replies, set the order geographically for the next “mail stops”. In essence, each person stating they want the sock will have to 1) be willing to pay postage to send it to the next stop (specify foreign or domestic) and 2) be the ’stop manager’, meaning either knit the 6 rows themselves or coordinate with others to participate with them and then be responsible for sending it to the next stop and 3) checking in with me once it has been sent on to the next in ‘line’. For simplicity sake, I am thinking I would only keep a line of 3-5 “stops”/people at a time. As it moves along, I would then take 3-5 more sign-ups on a first-come, first-served basis and line them up geographically. So it would kind of be a crap-shoot as to who gets it next based on when they read of openings in the line and how quickly they respond.

I’m still kinda working this idea out in my head. There are so many people in our club and I want as many people to participate as possible, but it will take time to get it circulated, so it would be difficult to maintain a long list-know what I mean?

Of course, camp would be an excellent time to have it out for a lot of campers to have-at it.

I’m open to other ideas, but keep in mind that there are only 365 days in a year and I think much more of us than that number!

Yay!!! I know I’m in hand-off distance to Leslie!! Just an idea, not sure how realistic, but when my sister taught Kindergarten and each student got to take home “Clifford the Big Red Dog” for a night or two there was a big class journal that they each made a page for (e.g., I took Clifford to my softball game, I took Clifford to see the Golden Gate Bridge). Not everyone would have to do it as there would be some time constraints, but may be fun to see the sock travels!!

This does sound like fun, will those of us in the UK and elsewhere get to join in?

On February 16th, 2008 at 2:03 am missmalice said:

Can we arrange for it to come to Sock Camp? We could certainly get a fair number of people to do 6 rounds each!

I’d be happy to bring it to the UK from Sock Camp if that would work and we could get a RSC knitters together to do a few rounds here! then send it back?

Count me in.

Just an idea but as the “count me ins” roll in, make a spread sheet of names and city/states. You can include addresses so that as we get it, after we knit our rows, we can send it to the next person on the list so to speak. Kind of like Flat Stanley for those teachers out there. Flat Stanley is a cut out person that visits areas, has his picture taken and then sent back to the classroom so the kids learn about a particular area of the country. So, lets wrap the sock, the mailing list, a throwaway camera, and get to knitting. What are we waiting for?

Someone on the blog can keep a chart as to who has had the sock so we can all “watch” as the sock travels.

I love the idea. Perhaps launching the effort at Camp and sending the sock abroad makes the most sense. Folks in AU–speak up! If the spreadsheet included email addresses, the area captain could choose to organize a small RSC public knitting moment. The logistics of this adventure are huge–good luck Leslie!

OH–think the sock could make a stop at The Fold? Or hook up with the sockateersat some point?

Actually missmalice I was hoping we could get you to get some of your other overseas folks to start a column of the correct # of stitches on a provisional cast on that we could add to the sock that you could bring to sock camp. This is a suggestion for all our overseas participants. Once we know approximate gauge and needle size anyone who wanted to participate could do a crocheted provisional caston knit their 6 rows from left over STR of the correct weight (Hey Tan what weight, gauge, and needle size are you starting?) then mail it to either Leslie or myself. Then we would be in charge of getting them attached to the sock. kind of like how other modular projects work. Happy Knitting, Alice

OK, so far it seems like there is alot of enthusiasm and like I said, I want to think this through a bit. I at first thought it would be best to do a short list, then add to it, but probably an Excel sheet would work best.

Tan is starting the sock and hopefully I can get it from her before Stitches West (next weekend). Being that BMFA will be at the show, it would be fun to officially “Launch” it there, only I expect that their booth will be full and busy with no extra hands/eyes/body to monitor this. This is meant to be fun and something we are doing as a club, not an extra responsibility for the BMFA people in terms of having to monitor, etc…

But-I do plan to be at SW on Friday and I know there will be other club members there, as well, but I’m not sure that it could be available the entire weekend-that would depend on whether BMFA or Purlescence* would be willing to maybe keep it at their booth. (*Purlescence is the BMFA retailer for Northern California and will also have a booth there). If it doesn’t work out, I’m sure we can make sure it ends up at camp-even if it starts circulating prior.

I definitely think the project should include our overseas members, though I’m not too hot on the “grafting on” idea. I think it is more fun for us all to just keep passing the sock and adding to the same one. Of course, logistically it will be more difficult and costly to mail out as the sock gets longer (and heavier). Maybe at that point, it would have to be a “pass it by hand” project, but we can worry about that later…

So…I will see about getting a spreadsheet together. Ideas on how/where to share the info? Is there a way/place to store the spreadsheet at this site? or link from this site to some other location?

I have to agree with Leslie - while grafting on will make it easier in some respects, the differences in gauge will make the grafting quite difficult I think, better to continue to knit form the single sock. I’d be happy to make a list of UK members, or even coordinate with European members. We could track progress via a new topic on this blog, with progress photos?

I just posted this to the Ravelry Bay Area Knitters group, in case anyone in the Bay Area would like to knit on the project.

“Any of you fellow BayArea Rockin’ Sock Club members who are interested in getting some rows knit on the “Longest Sock Project”–it is currently at Purlescence Yarn in Sunnyvale. Nathania has agreed to ‘host’ it for a couple of weeks. The project will be ‘officially’ launched at Camp Crow’s Feet.”

It is in its infancy stage and will be ‘offically’ launched at Camp Crow’s Feet. It will then make it’s way to the UK via Missmalice Post and hopefully participate in that wooley event (name of which I can’t recall at this time!). There are a few basic rules that Tan authored, as well as a few others conjured up. Tina and I spoke and agreed that: 1) Official launch will be Camp Crow’s Feet, 2) We can get more feedback and work out further ideas and details at that time, 3) Missmalice can and should (given her willingness) bring the project back to the UK with her since the sock will be a more managable (and ligher for posting) size at that point in time, 4) We must be VIGILENT not to lose this item!!! as we will be very sad if it were to disappear! 5) a short-row heel will be added to make the foot 9″ in lenght, which is Tina’s foot length! (Like how I just shared your innermost personal information with the club, Tina?!-lol!)

It looks like a Travel Blog is in order. I can add one to my eBlog account and I think I can have individuals join that blog to author it (need to figure that out). I really don’t want our Rockin’ Sock Project Blog to be a page of someone else’s website, but it’s own blog. If someone is more saavy about setting this type of thing up, LMK. I am a bit reluctant to do this aspect of it at this time until we are a bit further along or I get a bit more feedback.

Preliminary Rules:
1) You must knit with STR yarn
2) You must use the accompanying needles
3) To keep this going, please limit yourself to no more than 6 rows/rounds; less is ok…
4) You must log your participation (there is a sheet accompanying and eventually we will have a blog that each ’station master’ can report on)-names are optional
5) Though our emphasis is on club member participation, non-members will be allowed knit on the project(but will not be included as ’station master/host’…)

I think I covered just about everything to date.

ALICE-if you are reading this, is it possible this could be a standing topic for this site? Right now it continues to be pushed further down the list and I don’t want it to be too difficult for people to check on.
