Blocking…why?

Notorious Sock Knitters | February 21, 2008
By Laurie

I have been looking at the pics of socks and see many on blockers.  My nasty confession about sock knitting and maybe some of my other knitting is that I frequently omit blocking.  I know why its good for sweaters but is it horrible to not block socks?  Should I?  thanks for any thoughts on the blocking

I really only use my sock blockers to take nice pictures of my socks, and sometimes to hang them up to admire sock 1 while I’m working on sock 2, or while I’m waiting to weave in ends, etc. I think of them as “art”.

Also, blockers make them look like true socks, instead of what my friends call “porno socks”. You may have had to experience the Inside Out to visualize.

I have one pair I block so that they are big enough for me to wear. The pair my dear friend made for me one Christmas (the ones that started my whole obsession with wearing hand knit wool socks and thus the obsession with knitting them) are just a tiny bit short otherwise. I think they dry ever so slightly faster too as long as there holes in the blockers.

Also, blocking helps to make the stitches sit a little nicer. Especially if you had to go back and fix something and the tension is a little off.

I don’t block my socks…I’ve never gotten around to buying blockers because I always just decide to use the money for more sock yarn instead.

I have several pairs of decorative sock blockers. The idea I had when I purchased the blockers was to display some of my socks as art on my walls, but the socks always seem to end up on my feet before I can get them on the blockers. I have finished my Seredipity Socks (or Flame Dance as I have named mine) and when I finally get around to taking pictures, I will put them on sock blockers because they look so much nicer than my legs!

Thanks for your thoughts on blocking. I really like the idea of using the blockers to set the stitches and for taking pictures. I know that my socks will look better on the blockers, too. This is such a fantastic way of getting other knitter’s advice!
