Heel help… single & double wrapped stitches

General Knitting Questions | February 22, 2008

What is a single wrapped stitch versus a double wrapped stitch?I fear that I may have misinterpreted the direction to “knit to last unwrapped stitch” in rows 3 & 4 - was I supposed to be wrapping stitches at the end of each short row twice?

Oops - I missed the part where it says “W&T” in rows 5,6,7,8 - That’s where the double wrapped stitches come from.
I think it’s time for me to go to sleep! :-)

When I did my heel I found that I needed to hold the W&T stitch tightly other wise it made the intersection between the back side of the heel & front side of the heel loose & a little holy. I hope that on the next sock I can be more practiced with this heel technic because I like the ease of doing this rather than doing the heel flap technic….. I’m using 2 circ’s, any ideas to remedy this????

I’ve knit short row heels before so I was familiar with W&T. But I always knit the wraps into the work on the upper half of the hourglass. This pattern seemed to me to leave holes in the sides because you didn’t knit the wraps. So I frogged the heel and worked in the wraps and now I have no holes.

Did anyone else do that?

I experienced the holes, as well that’s why if I held the yarn tight it helped. I think I’ll try your technic, it sounds like it’s cleaner looking. Thanks

Let me know how it turns out. Just do a google for knitting wrapped stitches. It’s easy to do on the knit side (just stick the right needle into the stitch and the wraps), but on the purl side I actually lift the wraps and put them on the left needle, then purl them all together. It works for me.

I have a pretty looking side, exactly like on the photo of the heel, and then a hole-y side. Which I suspect is the purl side. I may fiddle with this for the next sock to see if I can close those holes.

I too ended up with a hole-y side and a very tightly closed side so am redoing the heel adjusting the tension. I am also changing my wrap technique - when wrapping from the pearl side I am keeping the yarn at the front and wrapping it to the back, before I was moving it to the right side of the work and wrapping to the wrong side (does this make sense) which was the opposite of the other end of the row. I have probably confused every one with this explanation!!!!! We will see how it turns out.

Susan, your wrap on the purl side makes sense. That’s what I ended up doing as well. Like I said (above), I decided to knit the wraps into the stitches after the heel turn and it turned out great. No holes.

To work in the wraps on the knit side, I just put the right needle into the wraps and then into the stitch and knit them all together. The purl side is a little more difficult, but from the back side, I lift the wraps and put them on the needle. Then I purl the 3 stitches together.

this heel has me lost, i’ve been looking at video and information and every time I attempt this heel it comes out nothing like the picture, not even close. the holes are very big :(
I must be doing something wrong…
When you do row 7 are you knitting the stitch, wrap and the stitch next to it? is that how you get 3 stitches??
