General Knitting Questions | February 22, 2008
I feel so stupid and frustrated at the same time. I have never made a sock before and have tried to knit blindly with this short row heel but I JUST DON’T GET IT!!
I have attempted twice now and will be frogging back to Row 26 for the 3rd time…sighhh
I am making the medium size using magic loop…of course I have 33 sts each needle and understand to knit 35st but cannot for the life of me understand this WRAP & TURN method…I’ve looked online for tutorials and thought I had it last night on attempt #2 but nope…and I’ve read through all the q&a on heel help to no avail…
has it just not “clicked” yet?? or what??? HELP!!!!!!!!!
thanks

I totally understand how it can be confusing and no worries, we’ve all been there. A wrap and turn sounds complicated but once you do it, you’ll be on your way to more and more socks.
To preform a wrap you knit the suggested amount of stitches. Bring the yarn to the front of your work as if you are to purl. Slip the next stitch to your right needle. Move the yarn to the back of the work. Turn your sock around with wrong side facing you and yarn in position to purl. Slip the “wrap” stitch to your right needle and begin purling across. This is how I preform a Wrap and Turn.
Hope that helps. If you go to You Tube there are tons of videos on this subject if you need a visual… Cat Bordhi has a pretty clear one…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yVikAvPuE4&NR=1
One thing to consider, heels are the very hardest thing to do on magic loop. If you’re doing short row heels, you can only work on one heel at a time because you never knit to the end of a row until the heel is finished; and then you have to do the other heel before you can start knitting magic loop again.
Even a traditional heel is very difficult to do on magic loop; I usually have to pick up the gusset stitches with a dp, and the pair I’m doing right now I ended up putting them on two circs until I finish the gussets.
If you’ve never knitted a sock before, you may never have experienced short rows. Many knitters experience short rows for the first time when they turn a heel on their first traditional sock. If you can find someone to show you or watch a video it will make a lot more sense. Barring that, someone at your LYS might at least know how to turn a traditional heel so you can see how the short rows work.
Thanks so much!
I have thought perhaps I need to switch to two circs for this part but wasn’t sure if even that would help.
I have no LYS here in southwestern Oklahoma…alas…but
I will definitely check out the youtube by Cat. I am just now home again from a long day at work and then out for the evening with dh. Am too tired to actually try it tonight but will let you know how it goes!
Thanks again! Keep your fingers crossed!
just to let you know I got it by watching Cat’s video tonight!!
