anglel-January toe ?

January Kit Questions | February 26, 2008
By Carolyn Angle

Hi everyone of you crazy rockin sock knitters. I am a first time rockin socker and I seem to be having some challenges with the size large pattern. I had trouble witht the count for the toe. I don’t see how you  get from 72 stitches to 76 stitches without increasing- anyway- Adjusting the pattern, I was able to make it work! Now I am having trouble with star toe. I am using the large size. How do you get from  76 stitches  to 66 with the decrease pattern in the directions for knit10, knit2together?  Can anoyone give a new rockin socker some help? Thanks much, Lynn

hi lynn

i am not sure where you are getting 76 sts from. the large should only have 72 sts. at the toe, you are decreasing a total of 6 sts per decrease round…so 72 decreases to 66, 66 to 60, etc.

the foot instructions are only rearranging the sts you have and are not the number of sts you should have for the foot…st count for the large is 72. (you are moving some of the heel sts BACK to the instep).

However if the 76 sts fits just adjust that first decrease round so you come down to 72 then follow the directions as written. That would mean *k17, k2tog repeat from * for one round. Knit at least one round plain before doing what ever comes next in the directions. Happy knitting, Alice

if you need to decrease down from the 76 sts to 72, i would suggest “k11, k2tog, k11, k2tog, k22, k2tog, k11, k2tog, k11; then knit 2 rounds plain. this will put you back to the correct spot for the next round of decreases. and will make the decreases match the remaining star toe.

you will need to start the toe 3 rounds sooner than you normally would.

Rookie knitter - patience please - I am having the same problem. I think what you all are saying is to follow the pattern (blindly) and do what it says and not think about the numbers.

I have the 72 stitches, but the confusion for the 76 came from the initial foot instructions - Knit 40. PM. Work 36 in lace pattern. PM to indicate end of lace. Sooo…I had the confusion of the extra 4 stitches to get me from 72 to 76, as well.

Please confirm that I should knit blindly and that is just a way to move the stitches as mentioned above.

Confused Rookie,
Tanja

hi tanja

if you have 76 sts, just follow my instructions in the above comment. that will get you down to 72 sts; and then you can follow the pattern.

if you have 72 sts, just follow the pattern. you will be fine. trust me. i may NOT know what i am doing :D
