March '08 Kit Questions | April 03, 2008
Hi -
I haven’t cast on yet. The Serendipity socks were my first experience with STR and I like it very much. I made the Serendipity socks in Medium on US1 DPNs. I’m thinking that since the Leafling yarn is mediumweight and the pattern calls for US 2 needles, that I would make a Small. Does that sound right? (My feet are 6.5 - 7 and not particularly wide or narrow.)
Thanks,
Marlene (”she who doesn’t swatch socks”)

I am making the medium, and they seem a little larger than my usual sock (I’m a size 8 1/2 or so), so with your smaller foot, I would definitely do a small.
I don’t swatch, either.
I made the Serendipity socks in Medium as well, using US1.5’s. I wear an 8.5, and I knit a small on US2.5’s (3.0mm). The bigger question is: what is the circumference of your foot??
I’m guessing a small would be right for you….either way…
I started doing the Mediums, but they seemed HUGE to me, so I’m making the smalls now on 2’s. So far, so good. I’ve only gotten the leg done on one, but it slides up my foot so far.
I wear a size 7 1/2 and my feet are very ‘normal’ as far as wide/narrow. I think that my Serendipity socks were a Medium, but I can’t remember off the top of my head. And I did those on size 1’s.
The thing that confuses me is that as long I get gauge then why does the sock come out so big? Is it the pattern down the front that is making such a difference? I made the medium in Serendipity at 8 1/2 sts per inch (3.00mm needles)and it is even a little snug. My generic, plain socks are knit with 8 sts per inch with 64 sts cast on. I use a 3.25mm needle and am a very tight knitter. This runs true whether I am using lightweight or heavyweight yarn. So I’m still not sure whether I should knit the medium or the small. My feet are 8 3/4″ around the ball of my foot and I wear a size 7 1/2 shoe.
I am also knitting the small. At the largest part of my foot I am 9″ around and I wear an 8 1/2 shoe (with hand made socks). I too have found some of the patterns to be too large for me, so I am sticking with the smaller size for circumference and then just making sure they are long enough for my feet. The Leaflings were feeling quite big even following the small directions, so I switched to the next smaller size needle (after about 1 1/2 repeats) and it feels much better now. Currently I am doing the gusset, and getting a “big” feeling again, and trying to decide at this point whether to “trust the pattern” or not do so many gusset increases, it has me stalled at the moment. Would love to hear more input on this………
Hi everyone. I had issues getting gauge, and so I made modifications to knit less stitches than even the small on the pattern we got. At JC Briar’s suggestion I’m posting here to let you know about it, in case you aren’t on Ravelry, or just haven’t seen it yet.
The modifications that I noted amount to a gigantic wall of text, so I won’t be posting those here. Instead I will post a link to my project page in Raverly, and also I copied that directly to a page into my blog, so you can also see it there if you aren’t on Ravelry. Both of the pages have pictures, so don’t look if you don’t want to see them yet.
I hope that this helps out anyone trying to make adjustments down a smaller size.
