March Kit Questions | April 25, 2008
pardon my boneheadedness, all. i do seem to be the only one here with a toe issue. duh.
i’m knitting both socks at once, in the ’small’ size, using two sets of 5 dpn’s. i had to bag stitch markers almost immediately, because they weren’t working with my mind, or the dpn’s. my stitch counts are correct, unless 60 st per sock is not correct.
the instruction for concluding ‘foot’ before beginning ‘toe’, reads: “End having worked round 7 of dotted leaves pattern. Next round: k30(33,36), removing markers indicating dotted leaves pattern. PM to indicate end of instep sts and beginning of sole sts. Knit to end of round.” then, for ’symmetrical toe’, “Work even in St st until foot is approximately 1-3/4″ less than desired length, then shape toe as follows:” <snip>
so. how do the stitches get divided for the decreases? does the dotted leaves pattern end up centered among the instep stitches? seems like a no-brainer that it ought to (because there’s no special instruction for making the other sock be a mirror-image); but i’m confused as to how this happens without my ending up with one odd stitch on the instep, since dotted leaves is a 21-stitch pattern. or do i just be off by one slightly to the left of the stitch pattern on one sock and to the right of it on the other? does that one stitch even matter at all before time to graft?
everything i think of to do seems to me impactful enough that it would have had an explicit instruction if it were right. since the instructions don’t tell me to do any of what i think might work, i don’t think any of my ideas can be right.
you’d think i’d have had trouble with the heel, but - noooooo … i’m the weirdo with the toe problem. i welcome suggestions and/or explanations.
thank you ~

It’s been a while since I finished my socks, so I don’t remember exactly how it worked out. Seems like there were 29 stitches on the sole and the rest (31) were on the instep prior to working the toe. I believe that I ended up slipping one of the stitches from the instep to the sole so that I was able to put 15 on each needle. I can’t remember which side I slipped it from, but suspect it was the left side of the instep. So I guess technically the leaf pattern is not centered, but it was only one stitch, so no biggy.
thank you! i believe i can now cope.
(sure wish i could edit my post to shorten it. ramble - ramble. geez.)
Actually you should be able to edit your post (but I wouldn’t). Use the “post to the blog” link.
At the top of that page are links to “manage” and “comments” along with “write” which should be highlighted or something like that. What you want is the “manage” link.
It will take you to a list of posts, find yours and click on the “edit” button to the right and your post will show up. Then you can edit your post and click “save” (or publish?) that should change what shows up in the post. Remember to click on the March kit questions category and unclick the NSK button. Thanks and hope this helps, Alice (aka Blog Mom)
Yup, COgirl got it right: the smallest size has 31 stitches in the instep (21 for the leafling patt, with 5 plain stockinette to each side), and 29 stitches in the sole. The beginning of the instep is indicated by a marker placed at the end of the heel instructions. At the beginning of the toe instructions, you place a second marker to indicate the beginning of the sole stitches–and, yes, when you do that, you shift one stitch from the instep to the sole, so the toe has the same number of stitches top and bottom.
