Questions about sock monkey kit

General Knitting Questions | May 20, 2008
By Cindy Black

I’m having trouble with my sock monket kit.  I’m just not getting joining in the round with only six stitches.  For some reason I just can’t do it.  I can’t tell if I am twisted, and I make a lot of socks, so joining is not new to me.  Any suggestions to help?

It’s fiddly, that’s for sure.

Try the Emily Ocker circular cast on method. I believe there are a few online tutorials for this, like this one.

Or the modified one, but I’m not sure there’s a tutorial online for it.

Here’s a simplified version of the Ocker cast-on that’s less bulky:

Make a loop of yarn: not a slip knot, just an “O” with the tail end of the yarn crossing over the ball end to create an “X.” Pinch the “X” with the thumb and forefinger of your left hand such that the “O” is pointing out to the right.

Take an empty needle in your right hand. Hold the yarn as you normally do when knitting. *Reach into the “O” with the needle, then wrap the yarn around the needle and pull a loop of yarn forward through the “O” as when knitting–that’s one new stitch. Yarn over to create another stitch. Repeat from *, using additional needles as necessary, until you have the stitches you need.

Knit a few rounds according to pattern, then pull on the yarn tail to close up the “O.”
