Left Lifted Increase Question

March Kit Questions | May 28, 2008
By Shelly Goering

Sad to say I’m a bit behind on the March kit and am now frenzied trying to complete it before I end up too far behind for May and have a stress disorder come fall when I’m three kits behind.

I’m about 3 inches into the leg on the first sock.  Love the pattern but have a question about the “left lifted increase”.  When you put the “left leg of the stitch two rows below” on the right-hand needle, is the “left leg” one strand or two?  I’m also finding it virtually impossible to insert the needle from front to back.  I’ve been lifting one strand from back to front and then “twisting” it when I put it on the left needle so it’s in correct position (or I’m knitting throught the back loop).  Did anyone else have this dilemma?  The pattern is coming out fine, but the center section between the leaves doesn’t look symmetrical — the LLI side is bulkier than the RLI side, so I wonder if I’m doing the stitch incorrectly.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks so much, and happy knitting!

The left leg is one strand. I also twisted my strand as I went, but mine turned out symetrical.

Hi Shelly,
No — you should only be picking up one strand during the LLI or the RLI. (Be careful to only pick up the left leg of the stitch 2 stitches down, not the left legs of it plus the stitch above.) I also found it difficult to insert the left needle from front to back to pick up this stitch. What I have been doing is to use my right needle to go through the stitch in question from front to back, lifting just the left leg of the stitch, then inserting the left needle from front to back, and then completing the new stitch. Hope this helps!

Thanks Terri and Jen! This helps a lot. After I posted, I also found a great YouTube video that Cat Bordhi did on left and right-lifted increases. She uses the right needle too. After watching that and reading your comments, I have been doing it right, but am really happy to be sure before I get further into it. Thank you very much!

Hi Shelly. You can also use the left needle, go in back to front, and then knit into the back of the loop instead of the front so that the stitch isn’t twisted. This just cuts down on some of the “fiddling” with moving the loop from needle to needle, etc. Hope this helps!
