Notorious Sock Knitters | June 08, 2008
Does anyone have any input on the sizing for the May sock? I did the Serendipity sock in Medium and they fit pretty well. I did Leafling in Small because of the heavier yarn and larger needles, but they’re still a little big.
What would you expect for Cleopatra?
I don’t swatch socks and won’t start now!

I think it’s hard to know because everyone knits differently. However, I knitted the small on Leafling and am knitting the medium on Cleopatra. The Cleopatras are fitting very well, and the Leaflings are borderline big (no negative ease).
Have you knitted much with STR? I have been able to kind of get a feel for what needles and what stitch count will fit me in light and medium weights of STR. I was a little worried that the travelling stitches in Cleopatra would make it tight, but no problem.
I wear a size 8 1/2 regular width and the length Marjan said to knit before starting the gusset seems to be correct for me. I am ready to do the heel turn.
Hmmm. My only experience with STR is with the last two RSC patterns, and now this one. I have the most experience with Koigu.
My shoe size is 6.5 - 7, very medium width. I know that with Koigu and very plain top down sock with 64 stitches on US 1 needles is good for me. A 56 stitch sock is a little snug to get on.
I guess I need to parse the Cleo pattern to see how many stitches are in the cuff. I assume lightweight STR is compartable to Koigu.
I usually knit a 64 stitch sock with STR lightweight. I am knitting the Cleopatra’s in size large and they are fitting my average width size 10 feet perfectly.
I wear a size 9 shoe and the mediums fit me beautifully in Cleopatra, whereas the Leaflings were sorta huge! I did go up a needle size and am glad I did, though was really surprised at how much one size will change nice stripes to pooling.
I usually knit the small or medium size, depending on the pattern. The only trouble I ever had was on one where there were a number of cables across the arch of the foot, and it nearly took a shoehorn to get them on! I ripped them back and did a basic cuff, which worked really well, as it was a reversible rib and cable pattern…but I really, really liked the cables. Maybe I’ll knit it again, bigger, when the trauma heals!
My suggestion - take your january sock - and measure the gauge - this should tell you whether you need to change needle size -
I’ve just frogged a number of rows on the May sock and I’m going to work the cuff in a larger needle size. I just couldn’t get the sock on my foot comfortably. Will that help? I’m wondering if I need to frog even more and re-knit with the larger needle. I love this pattern and want to make it work!
