May Sock Problems

Notorious Sock Knitters | June 15, 2008

I started ny first May sock this weekend. I tried a provisional cast on technique I saw described in another posting. (Waste yarn goes right onto the needle rather than picking it up from the back bumps of a crocheted chain.) It seemed to go well, but the chain didn’t unzip properly and I ended up with one or two few stitches. I inititally just tried to comprensate by making some stitches. But I wasn’t crazy about how one side of the toe looked - it was very holey. The other side looked great.

Anyway, I ended up frogging the whole thing (it was only the toe, so not a big deal). Before I start again, I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out why the toe was holey and why my chain didn’t unzip well.

You probably unzipped it from the wrong end…easily done (I’m living proof, having done the same thing a couple of times! I always mark the end I need to unzip from, now. Also, I always cast on 2 or 3 extra stitches at the beginning and end in the provisional yarn. That way, there’s a little chain on the end, so you won’t lose any of your stitches! Hope this helps!

indeed you may have unzipped from the wrong end. This is the reason that I do a crochet *chain*, rather than directly onto the needle. With the chain, I place a tiny knot at the ‘unzip-end’, so there is no mistake.
With the provisional crochet cast on, you can easily end up one stitch short, that’s very common. Make one at the end, after unzipping.
The wraps need to be snugly around the stitch bases. I assume you made double wraps at both sides in the second half of the toe. The wraps themselves - and picking them up later - should prevent any holes.

Are you picking up the wraps and knitting/purling them with the stitches? I had holes the first-time through and realized I wasn’t doing this.

I also crocheted straight onto the needle and I did tie a knot into the end to mark the right end to unzip but had to unpick the crochet. I can only conclude that I crochet upside down or something! Maybe I twist my stitches when putting them on to the needle.

Instead of provisional caston, I used a figure 8 cast on on two circular needles.

I started over. I used the same method, crocheting the stitches onto the knitting needle. To help me not lose stitches when I unzip, I ran a lifeline through the first row of working yarn stitches.

Is that weird? It should work, right?
