Notorious Sock Knitters | June 27, 2008
I had a terrible time figuring out the instructions for the back of the cuff. But first, I do want to stress that I don’t think that the pattern is incorrect for that section, just lacking in some details. First, I had no idea if or when the back slash pattern ended or how to make the front and back slash patterns merge seamlessly when the front slashes went over the back slashes. And for the longest time, I was confused by the instructions to work the back of the cuff the same as the front. In my mind, I saw the back center expanding as large as the front. In actual practice, that didn’t work. After two hours of endlessly ripping back, I think I ended up with the back cuff as it was intended. But I’m not sure because there isn’t a photograph of the back of the cuff anywhere on the pattern or on ravelry. I realize that the back of the cuff isn’t a spot most people photograph, so I can’t say I’m that surprised. But this was one time I really could have used a photo. So to end this rather long post (sorry), I love the pattern and think that Yarnissima is just a wonderful designer, but I really think that the cuff instructions need a bit more clarification.

Hi Lisa,
This is how the back should look:

You’re correct. The front and back cuffs are not equal. It sounds like you’ve worked it out! When moving the front slash across the side ladders and back slash you reach a point where you are no longer able to work all the stitches in pattern, and need to simplify by just working a K1tbl rather than the whole series of stitches with YOs. The front slash stitches are dominant and chew up the stitches they are crossing over, so at some point you won’t have enough st to work *both* the front and back slashes, and you have to work enough of the orphaned back slash st to keep in pattern and support the front slash st. Hope that makes sense…I haven’t had my coffee yet!
Hi Lisa -
yoshi asked on the Ravelry RSC forum:

Gail explained it very well. The front slashes get prioritized and eat up what they encounter when travelling to the back.
Thanks for the help. I did figure it out correctly, after all. The photo really helps. Thanks.
I too found it vague, and felt like I was making it up as I went along, but mine wound up looking just like the pattern photos, so I guess it was alright!
Finally getting around to this sock and I, too, was confused. The photo explains it all. Back to tinking. . .
