who has given up on the July sock pattern? Frustratingly wordy pattern x long swaths of stockinette=AAAARRRRGHHHBLEEEECH!
Already wishing for August….

I hadn’t realized the July pattern had gone out already?
Are yo sure you don’t mean the May (Cleo) pattern, and you’re wishing for the July kit?
I’ve had a hard time with this one…took a few tries to get the toes right. I’m just starting the pattern part. I find the LTC and RTC awkward, but have only done it with a cable needle. I guess I’ll try it without.
I’m only two rounds beyond the toes, so I don’t think I’m qualified yet to say whether I like the pattern or not.
I’m just to the heel of my first sock. It took several sttempts and LOTS of frogging, but I did finally get it. Once you have the pattern down, it goes pretty smoothly. Reminds me of the Grasshopper pattern last year which I never have been able to figure out.
Yeah, my bad on the July/May mix-up. I could just tell looking at the pattern I wasn’t in for a good time, but tried to bust on thru. Suffice to say- half a dozen attempts and I’m cooked. The finished sock is pretty but I’m so not into loooong winded patterns and the yarn is beautiful; now just contemplating what to do with it…..
Thanks for hearing me out in a grip.

I just frogged the first Cleo sock too. My “knitted diamond” looked *nothing* like the picture on the pattern and was in no way symmetrical.
It’ll be a stunning sock if I can get the pattern down, but it does seem a tad fiddly. I’m trying to decide if I want to try again with the pattern or just use the (absolutely gorgeous) yarn for a different sock.
I got both toes done (2 sets of DPNs) and started the foot pattern on one today. Got a few rows in and decided that I couldn’t face two socks worth of fiddling with the LTC / RTC maneuvers.
So I frogged. Love the yarn though and want to use it so I decided it’s time to be the last person in the universe to make Jaywalkers.
GET OUT! I just KNEW I couldn’t be the only one to wave the white flag! And, Marlene you’re the second to last!
best to all-

There is nothing wrong with using your lovely yarn for what ever pattern you prefer. Although we did pay for the pattern, it just doesn’t always “fit” us all. Is the matter of fact my very first kit I received I made Monkeys with the yarn because I was not thrilled with the patter. *smile* I look forward to seeing what you knit with this bright and wonderful yarn!
I started and frogged as well. Didn’t like the results and the pattern was not “fun” at all.
I’m glad I’m not the only one to give up. I felt bad, but I also want to be done by the time the July kit arrives. (Look up “nerd” in the dictionary and you’ll see my picture.)
I use sock knitting for fun portable knitting, and I knew this pattern wouldn’t fit that requirement for me. This is supposed to be fun, not a job, right?
The photos of the finished Cleos I’ve seen are very nice, though.
Yeah - not a fun knit for me. It hurt my hands and I was getting cranky, then I remembered I knit so that I’m LESS cranky. I’m going to use the zombie sock pattern(on ravelry) instead and I can’t wait!
Whew!,
I got the May yarn, and I immediately wanted something lacy, lacier at least. I havent even started the purple.
I sorry…..
Yeah, lacy would’ve been preferable especially when knitting in the heat; nothin’ to be sorry about, but I did feel a bit sad/bad for not being into the pattern and calling it quits and had to give a shout out to see if anyone else agreed. Sometimes you just gotta be a part of the crowd!
Hey, with the names highlighted is there supposed to be some profile/msg. feature? When I click on a name I just get redirected to the same screen. Since I’m a total techno-douf I’m never sure of these things.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL!!!

I’ve been on the fence for the last few days about whether to frog or not. I’m halfway through the gusset on my first sock, and like another poster mentions, it’s just not fun. In fact, I’ve been having so much indecision about this sock that I’m suffering from knitting paralysis - I don’t feel like moving forward, but I feel guilty picking up something else when there’s a half-finished sock lying, accusingly, on the coffee table. So not much knitting has been happening lately.
I bet this colorway would look good in the Inside-Out pattern from last year. I will now frog without guilt and start looking for another pattern for this lovely yarn.
ROCK IT, Ang! Inside-Out style!
Yeah…. me too. I am half way up the leg and just don’t like the results. Didn’t have trouble with the pattern and am absolutely IN LOVE with the yarn, but….I am doing it. Pulled the needles and am rewinding the yarn. Got to find a different pattern. Hard for me and my personality type (whatever that is) to not complete a project or change to a different one. I am getting better in my older years. No insult at all to the designer. Onward and upward. It’s really OK. Can I find the Inside-Out pattern somewhere?
I’d like to thank everyone for being so well behaved on this post. If something like this had been posted last year it would have gone down in flames. It’s wonderful!
I have yet to start this pattern or the one before. Gads I can’t believe I’m this far behind in this sock club. Maybe I’ll get caught up on a long train ride next week.
Robin Inside Out should be available on the website as it’s been over a year since it went out to club members.
Happy Knitting All. Vive le Tour de France! Alice
No you are not the only one, didn’t want to say anything bad about this pattern, my upbringing wouldn’t let me, but it was frogged about six times and then given up on until a few weeks ago, am almost finished with the first sock and have decided not to make the second, it was a learning experience.
The only thing I did was to make the large in the bigger needles in order for it to fit.
hi all,
just a little note from the designer….I used lots of stockinette to compensate for the tricky slashes, and to let the yarn be like it is: beautiful. Lots of lace would have drowned any pattern combined with this particularly gorgeous yarn.
I’m also getting ready to frog after knitting almost one entire sock and knit something else with the yarn - probably Jaywalkers, as I would be the OTHER last person in the knitting universe who has not yet knit a pair.
No offense to the designer who, IMO, did a beautiful job! I love the look of this pattern. I’m just not feeling the crosses and am already sensing the second sock syndrome, despite not having finished the first one yet.
Marjan-
Please be sure that I did not create this post to slam your design in any fashion and have stated several times that it is beautiful to behold; many others have agreed. It was never my intent to offend your design.
Sincerely,
JFo
I threw in the towel to on these. I decided to make no pearl monkeys instead and deal with the pattern some other time otherwise I would never be finished in time for the next shipment.
I thought it was just me!
I love the yarn - purple’s my favorite color!
And I love the design.
I’m not ready to give up entirely yet, but I am finding it fiddly at a time when I really don’t have patience. I’m just putting them aside for a bit until I have time to concentrate - it seems like once you get it figured out, they’ll probably fly. As an extra wrinkle for me, I have narrow feet and have to extrapolate to something like an XS in the foot, which is always much harder with a toe-up, and especially hard since this pattern has different beginnings for the different sizes. So I have to wait till I can sit down and really figure out what’s happening and how best to adjust it down.
Gotta say “thanks” to everyone. The yarn has been sitting here on my table mocking me but the pattern wasn’t “talking” to me like other patterns. It is beautiful don’t get me wrong. After reading this post, I feel like someone (YOU) have given me permission to use the yarn for something else. Thanks so much.
Ok, ok, I know I didn’t really need anyone’s permission but I try to play by the “rules” and knit what comes out. It is part of the learning experience. I couldn’t get the grasshoppers last year either and once I saw that post…..well……
Plus a new shipment is on the way and the Knitty sping foward pattern is out…and…I have way too many things on needles and am working summer school right now. (Need some cheese with this whine)
I finished my Royal Cleos a couple of weeks ago. I did have a little bit of a problem with this pattern at first, it was somewhat of a challenge for me. I opted to use a cable needle, and once I finished the first pattern repeat and had the sense of the pattern I only made one big boo-boo, but I decided not to frog because it was on the back of the leg, and unless someone wants to closely examine my leg, I am the only one who is going to notice it is there. I don’t have to be perfect in my socks for myself, just as long as I enjoy making and wearing them. Hang in there, the pattern gets easier as you go!
I totally get what you guys are saying. I’m still in the same place on the first sock where I was a month ago. It just came at a time when my mind was very preoccupied and I needed simplicity instead of something that needed more concentration than I could muster. I like the design a lot as it looks beautiful with this yarn, but I agree with some of you, it is more fiddly than I care for and I did have thoughts of frogging it and doing something else. But instead of frogging, I decided to put it aside to pick up later when I’m more in the mood to work on it again and decide then if I want to continue, perhaps modify, or frog and do something else.
And for the record, I’m also in the group of knitters who are the last to make Jaywalkers - I’m in the midst of my first one.
I must not be the only one who LOVED it! But I have knitted other Yarnissima patterns, so I’m used to her method. But I haven’t knitted Jaywalkers. I still want to, though.
Well, I’m not done yet, but the more I work on mine, the more I like it. I’m just not fond of one particular stitch ’cause I haven’t gotten the best of it yet, but I love how my sock is looking.
And with all socks, the heel/gusset section always is slow work for me anyway, regardless of type - traditional heel flap/gusset, short row, reverse heel flap, Cat’s style, Yarnissima’s, whatever!- I always bog down at this point.
Contrary to this post I CAN be a team player…just downloaded the Jaywalker pattern (toe-UP!) and will be casting on this afternoon!
Best to all-
JFo
I’m not finished yet either, but I love the socks so far. I had to frog a few times–I started the toe 4 times–but I like the way the crocheted cast-on and now I know how to do it. (I do want to try Judy’s Magic Cast On–thanks NSKs for that info) I agree with happystasher that working the pattern takes some concentrating. That is why I have another “easy” sock in progress (even though I don’t like to have too many projects on the needles.) But all knitting should be fun and pleasurable, especially RSC knitting. So “do what you want to do” with yarn and pattern and have loads of fun.
I struggled with the pattern as well, but my personality type made me finish it and learn something. I did finish the socks and they are very nice!!!! They fit really well and just have a really nice feeling to them. I was glad to learn that others had some difficutly too!!!
I too enjoyed this pattern, and have not yet knit a pair of Jaywalkers
I also frogged multiple times. I finally finished sock #1 and decided I didn’t want to do it again. I did learn a lot and it was an interesting pattern, but I am looking for something that allows me to breathe a lot easier.
Reality for me is that I really like the pattern and I’ll stick it out having nearly finished one sock but my original plan of making a pair for my sister has faded. My finger tips are taking a beating which sounds all whiney but its true. Best thing for me was the toe up because I’ve always wanted to try it but kinda stuck to what I knew best.
