stitch count for large size gumdrops

I have finished the picot edge and have 74 stitches. EVERY time I k2tog then YO I end up with 73 stitches on the needles. What am I missing here?

I was going to try YO then k2tog next, but I thought I should ask first.

I imagine this: you’ve worked your way around the sock, paused to count the sts… and as you pause, the yarn dangles to the front, instead of laying across the needle to the back, effectively undoing the last yo. Could that be it? Just bring the yarn to the back over the needle, and you should have your 74th st.
