Notorious Sock Knitters | January 29, 2009
Is anyone trying to do two socks at a time with this pattern? I have never liked just knitting one sock than having to start over again. I did it for my first pair of socks, and than switched to two at a time and have been doing it ever since. Would love to hear from someone already doing this…..

Linda, I haven’t started yet but when I do, I will try doing it with 2 at a time. I’m like you. I doing my other socks this way.
Me too! I was thinking I might try the tubular cast-on, then transfer the stitches to my two circs, if I can’t figure out some way to do the entire thing on two circs from the get-go. Just don’t want to go back to making socks one at a time!
I am an addicted 2s2c (my shorthand for two socks on two circs) knitter. I have done all my socks (several dozen pairs) this way and will never do them any other way. I also convert almost all of my patterns to toe-up and rarely knit from the top down. I love having a beautiful new PAIR of socks to wear when I weave in the last tails. I also find if I make a mistake, I usually will do it on both socks and if it is not a horrible mistake that I have to frog, the socks will match and the mistake will look like it is supposed to be that way. I have also knit two and three pairs of socks at the same time on the same two circs.
How are you going to split the skein? I usually knit from the outside and center pull yarn on the cake, but am unsure how that would work with the beads….
I knit 2s1c - 2 at a time on one circular - since otherwise I would never make a pair. I used to be the Queen of SSS, before I discovered this method. I cannot return to the old way. If I cannot fiddle my way through this pattern with 2 at a time I’m afraid it’ll have to be a different pattern.
I wind the skein into 2 balls.
I knit two at a time but not on one needle, I just work part of one then part of the other etc. This way I finish both around the same time.
I am very interested in learning both the technique of sock knitting on circular needles and how to do TWO AT A TIME - wow, that’s a really exciting concept. I have only ever knit socks (and I’ve only ever knit about 4 prs of socks) on dpns and from the top down. Any suggestions on good sources on how to learn to do this? Do you think this beaded sock is a good first project for trying to change techniques?
I knit all my socks 2-at-a-time and will do these this way, as well. I work from both ends of the skein, so I will thread half of hte beads onto each end of the skein and start to knit. I have two other pairs of socks to finish first and then will be one my way with these.
Leslie - get Melissa Morgan Oakes book 2-at-a time Socks to learn this technique. If you get the first or second printing of the book be sure to check the Storey website for errata - they were fixed in subsequent editions of the book.
Thanks llamalady. I’m searching the web looking for where I can get a copy.
Who knew you could get so excited about knitting a pair of socks!!
Leslie, I also recommend the Melissa Morgan Oakes book, but I have it for the patterns. The book teaches you two socks on one very long circular needle, a technique I find tedious (I can never keep the required “loop” between the socks. Nonetheless, there are some really great patterns.
Here is a link to an online tutorial for two socks on two circulars. I refer to it from time to time, as this is my preferred method.

I hope it’s O.K. to post links here.
does anyone know how much each ball of yarn should weight? i need to cut a section out and one ball will be smaller but I think it should still be enough…
my feet at usually 7.5, I haven’t done the measurements for the pattern yet.
I’m planning to try it this way. I have done dpns, then learned magic loop, now I love to do two at a time on one circular. (I also enjoy the attention this method gets while kniiting in public.) I haven’t figured out exactly what to do with the beads yet.
I also wind the ball into two skeins. At first I tried to measure, but this proved to be inaccurate and lots of time I ended up having to knit the last little bit of a pair from the inside and outside of the ball. Not the easiest as far as I am concerned. I finally broke down and got a digital scale made for food measurement at the home store. I weigh the skein before I begin and then wind about half, by weight, taking into account the weight of the center of the ball winder (you can easily remove this, weigh, and then replace if you need to wind more onto the ball). This works well for me. I will usually end up with a foot or two of more yarn on one ball than on the other, which is acceptable to me. Since I knit toe-up, I end the sock when I run out of yarn.
I will be trying to do two at a time as soon as I get a new circular needle. I’ll let you know how it goes
I too, usually knit two at a time on DPs. One from the outside and one from the inside. With the beads, will I have to string some on at both ends?? Or would it be easier to wait until I get one done and then do the other one?
Well, I’m midway through the first leg beaded brocade pattern, and so far so good. I am doing it Magic Loop and pulling from the outside and inside. I threaded beads on both ends, and started the outside yarn through a baggy. [I put a hole in the bottom of the bag and threaded the yarn through it and out the ziplock end.] This allows be to pull a large amount of yarn from the outside and ball it and put it in the bag.
I did start the socks on two separate circulars because of the tubular cast on, but once they were joined into a circle, it was on to the 32″ circular.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions,,,,I’m glad I’m in such good company with all you two at a timers. KNIT ON
Doing 2 at a time for the first time and loving it. I split the skein in two and it’s going really well.
