January '09 Kit Questions, Notorious Sock Knitters, Warning Spoilage | January 30, 2009
Uggh, please help. I just strung 180 of 200 beads and went to push them down only to be stopped by a knot! My only consolation at this point is that I didn’t find the knot after knitting 3 inches into the cuff. However, I have to unstring, cut a foot or so of yarn and start over - KNOT Ha! the end of the world but frustrating and making me look at the wound ball with skepticism! What if it happens again - what will I do?
Hey veterans - don’t leave me hanging and don’t tell me to cut and start over. How’s that for a challenge?!?

If you have a “Big Eye” needle you can *gasp* cut the yarn and use the needle to “bridge the gap” for the bead to move on down the yarn. I haven’t tried it with these beads but was shown this technique in a Stitches class. Hope this helps you past the knot.
I just remembered I came across a knot while I was winding it into a ball. Way down in there, so I am hoping it is right about a sock length in, but it probably isn’t. I didn’t even think what a problem that would be with beads. Blerg. I guess I will try some method of bridging the gap if it comes down to it.
wow, i’m so sorry! but selfishly glad that i read this before winding or stringing anything. now i know to take the time to untie any knots i encounter while winding! yikes!
I too had problems with knots but after knitting quite a bit. I had 4 knots/thick spots in the first sock! I was able to kind of shave down the yarn a bit and force the beads over it. I was NOT cutting the yarn and restringing all beads. I truly hope this doesn’t happen when working on my second sock!
I had a knot about 10 rows in and there was no way to get the beads over it. It wasn’t even the kind of knot that could be undone. Just 2 ends tied together. So, I cut the yarn, restrung the beads while they were still on the yarn which went a little faster than just picking them up one at a time and went on with the sock. After a few rows, I wove in the ends, moved on and decided not to let it bother me anymore. It’s been a joy otherwise.
Don’t Panic! Get a pin, and use it to loosen the knot. Then make it big enough to pull the ball of yarn through. That way you don’t disturb the beads. This works for me, and I hope it will work for you.
My knot is mid leg - two pieces of yarn joined together. Misery loves company?
Just restrung the beads and am taking.
