Notorious Sock Knitters | February 09, 2009
This is my second pair of socks. I turned the heel. then I knit half of the heel placed a marker and knit the rest of the heel for a total of 20 stitches. Size medium.
I am not sure what to do next. Is the heel flap the long piece that the heel sits on? I am confused. Do I pick a stitch in each slipped stitch along the long piece that the heel sits on.
Does the instep start at the end of that long piece ? Are the instep stitches on the other needles? Can you see how confused I am? Thanks for your help.

Take a look at this website. I think it explains sock-making very well, and has lots of photos.

I hope this clears things up for you.
Hi Andrea!
You’re right! The heel flap is the long piece of knitting that the heel turn is attached to. You pick up stitches on the sides of the heel flap in order to make the sock go around your foot.
http://knitting.about.com/od/knittingglossary/g/sock-heel.htm check out the little diagram of the sock, the heel flap is knit in blue.
As you knit, you will decrease along the sides of the foot in order to get the sock to fit properly (this is the gusset). The picture on page 5 shows the nice line of decreases that make up the gusset.
The instep stitches are the ones you didn’t knit with at all while you were knitting the heel flap and turning the heel (ie, that . These are the stitches that you will knit the pattern in and will be on the top of your foot when you put the sock on.
Good luck!
You can do it!
The heel flap is the long piece that you just knit, it should be sort of a square or rectangle shape. The next step once you’ve turned the heel is to pick up stitches along the side of the heel flap (you want to try to get it into a circle again.) So yes, pick up a stitch in each of the slipped stitches. I usually pick up one or two more near the instep to avoid holes. The instep starts at the top of the sock - you’ll hit it after you pick up the first set of stitches. Knit across it instep in pattern, and pick up the stitches in the other side. That takes you back to the bottom of the heel, which is where your round starts.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, Rhiannon.
