Not Socks | February 17, 2009
At Madrona this past week I saw a NSK that was making fingerless gloves with her kit instead of socks.
Anyone else stepping out…?
Making something other than sockies?
We would love to see and hear about it.
( Sorry Deborah I see that you did in fact do this also. My excuse is that I was off planning sock summit and working Madrona. You gloves are loverly)
And what was really funny was that this NSK did not have the rest of her beads with her. I had a kit with me so I checked on the oh so very slim chance that I had the same exact color she needed and you know what? I did! We were both thrilled.
Speaking of beads and a picture is worth a thousand, trillion words…here is Jen ( our brand new sockateer) the day after she posted on the ravelry group about the possibility of beads being included in this kit and why. She had no idea there were beads in this kit and she showed up to help and viola we gave her beads to package. I was at a meeting and missed this wonderful moment. I so wish I could have been there when she walked through the door and saw what was waiting for her. It still makes me laugh a lot.
So here she is our brand new sockateer Jen. ( by the way she needs a name) I cannot think of a more appropriate way to welcome her in true rockin sock club style.

Thanks for coming to my rescue! It must have been kismet
I still can’t believe you had the right color (and that I had forgotten mine at home!) I’ll be sure to post pics when I’m done.
As for a name for Jen, the first thing that comes to mind is Caruncle, or Cockscomb from the bright red shirt and in keeping with the chicken theme
Recently, we were laughing with German friends about the sounds we say to imitate animals.
A rooster, in German: kikeriki (pronounced: kick-err-ree-KEY).
A lady hen would cluck: tock tock.
But perhaps, most appropriate, being the newest sockateer, a baby chick: piep piep.
Somehow ‘piep piep’ and the Jen I know don’t go together, even with her Germanic background! Maybe a taller animal.
Is that Cat Bordhi hanging out in the middle of the shot?
yes she is our expert bead packer!
I have not cast on yet but I’m considering the fingerless glove idea. If I made socks I’d have to stop the beading at the ankle, and that makes me sad. I’ve also mused about adapting the pattern into a scarf — what does the wrong side look like, is it presentable?
I’m going to do the glove thing too, but probably with full fingers since I have yet to knit up classic full gloves. The irony being is that my skein only has single knot & single slub are close to the end of one end.
So, is that how you become a Sockateer — bribe you with Eviiiiiiil Brownies? If I lived closer, you bet I’d give it a try!! When I grow up, I want to be a Sockateer! Congrats to Jen. I’m soooo envious. :o)
Hey, I’m not so good with nicknames, but maybe her nickname could be something related to chocolate or brownies??
Not doing gloves. Doing socks with beads all the way, baby, because they will look so cool with my new black Mary Jane Danksos!
My Knotty skein will become long, fingered opera gloves. Complete with pattern (I’m hoping to have it point into a diamond across the back of the hand)
I am designing spats - to go OVER shoes. I love the socks and the beads, and want them all to show. They will stop where the leather meets the sole.
Sarah
That’s kind of awesome, Tina. I mean, I know you lead a pretty rockstar life at this point, but sometimes the awesome people you get to hang out with makes me jealous.
Then again, I have some pretty rockstar friends too, so I guess it evens out!
PS. I forgot to comment about JustJen’s new Sockateer nickname. Piggy-backing on Lou’s comment, you don’t want to call her the Decadent Brownie? Or something yummy dessert-ish from your list of colorways? Come to think of it, how about starting a new colorway theme around JustJen’s brownies & Gail’s chocolate bread pudding and all the other good stuff they bake.
Or better yet, make our Sock Camp homework to bring something chocolate-y or sweet in general.
Name? Maybe “inJENuous? or “serJENdipity”? sorry, the unregenerate English major is on the loose again..
hmmm kind of like the brownie idea
a lot
Yes! Fingerless gloves here, and they are pretty! Warm! Beaded all over!

Gee, I was not going to admit this but…I did knit a lovely hat from one of the kits. I just could not deal with all the cables. However, I have gotten many compliments on the hat. And yes, I had thought about fingerless gloves from another unknit kit but hesitated…I will hesitate no more.
Those beads must have been Cockeyed’s version of a sockateer initiation..hehehe I’m liking the brownie idea too!!
You want “initiation”? Try finding out that you’re a Sockateer by reading the RSC blog!
Poor Tina got “Wait, WHAT?!?” email from me last night.
As you all can probably imagine, I’m thrilled beyond words.
I ended up making a Spiraluscious neck warmer (Anne Hanson pattern) with my skein. It’s not finished quite yet, but I really like the way it’s knitting up so far. I adore this colorway. It’s sent me on quite a blue streak - now much of the yarn that I’m eyeing is a shade (or shades) of blue! This is a new color pathway in my knitting, and I’m loving it.
I’ll probably pick up another skein to make the socks, though. I’ve been drooling over the photos on Ravelry!
RSC deserves Jen and Jen deserves a brownie theme. She catapulted into her own rock star status with those evil confections!
congrats Jen! hope your shock has worn off!!
i knew my beads were special!
Maybe the famous “Death By Chocolate” could be shortened to Dead Chocolate. And Brownie is a great nickname for anyone who makes such wonderful brownies.
mwaahahahahah
hey with all of this sock summit stress a girl needs an outlet.
yikes!!!
Hey Tina (and Steph and Cat) Great job on the teacher list for Sock Summit. Now I again have to make two trips the the PNW this year. See you soon at camp and again in August. Must save $$$ for these 2 events but need to visit Toni in Marengo some time soon too.
I did do fingerless mitts, but last night I finished my matching socks. Now I have both!
Chocolate Assasin? Chocolate Sniper? And yet, I always picture Jen’s clogged feet on her Ravatar when I think of her–that, and the decadent chocolate brownies. Sniper Bearing Chocolate Decadence–(SBCD)? Ah, I need to think on this one!
