Rosebud question

March '09 Kit Questions, Warning Spoilage | March 28, 2009
By Jen G.

So I just got to my first rosebud and I’ve tried it a few times but it just doesn’t look right.  When you draw the loop of yarn forward through the fabric - is that just like knitting a stitch?  Or are you supposed to draw it through somewhere lower?  Any advice?

Hi Jen,
I did the test knitting of these beauties, so I’ll try to answer your question.

Yes, just as you said…it’s just like knitting a stitch. You basically poke your needle through the fabric, from front to back, wrap as if to knit, and pull the stitch back through to the front. You need to elongate the stitch to approx 4 rows worth. You need to find a tension that works well for you…too loose and it may not be tidy, and too tight, and it might be puckery.

Let me know if that helps…if not I’ll rephrase!

Hi Gail. I just got my kit and was reading the rosebud pattern. I get the ‘4 rows below’ bit and also when you purl the next stitch. But the ‘Turn. P1, k1, p1, turn’ got me all confused. Do you do all these onto one stitch, the same stitch where you did the first purl?

My “rosebuds” are coming out more like “roseblobs”…

Before the turn, you’ve knit a long st, purled the next stitch on the needle, then knit another long st >> 3 st. After the turn, you work each of these st individually: purl the first stitch, knit the next, and purl the third…so, no, not all into the same stitch. Then you turn again, and K3tog.

See if that helps. I’ll check back in here to see how you’re doing.

Gail, you’re a star!
I tried this on the sock I am currently knitting just to get a hang of it. Now it all makes sense. I think I am ready to knit this pretty pattern now, but first I promised myself I’d finish at least two projects and then get on with it. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!

Who was that wonderful person who did the video? Thank goodness! I’ve knit two repeats of the rosebud pattern and ripped them out twice because I have been doing it WRONG! Thank you wonderful person and thank you Andrea for posting this.

Aha - I had been picking up one of the ‘legs’ of the knit stitch 4 rows below, not going right through the fabric as the video shows. Know I know what I’m doing - thanks!

I am starting on these socks a little bit late, but I send a big thanks to the YouTube Professor of the Rosebud Stitch. I was also only picking up the stitch on the front of the sock, as well. I could not figure out what in the heck I was doing wrong until I watched the video. The blog is also a wonderful help to the production of these beautiful (the yarn is amazing!) socks.

I’m just about to start the rosebuds and glad to see all the advice. For some reason didn’t catch this area for the beaded sox. Would have saved me lots of grief, but I finally finished them
