May '09 Kit Questions | September 25, 2009
I am having problems with my brain.
I’m making the medium size of the Fraggle rock pattern and I don’t understand how there can be 33 instep stitches given the patterns in play. At the end of the gusset there were 35 instep stitches and working to the end of the 4th round gives me 5 right squiggle, 7bubble stitch and surrounding purls, 10 squiggle lace, 7 bubble, 6 left squiggle — total of 35. Should I just omit the yo’s in the right and left squiggles?
Also, although I think I kind of get the concept behind the pattern toe, I don’t understand the directions. Can anyone rephrase in terms of the position at the beginning or end of the instep or sole sections? It says “next decrease” for both 2nd and 4th but shouldn’t one be done at the end of the instep/beg of sole and the other beg of instep, end of sole?
Thanks

Here’s how you get 33 sts in the instep as well as in the sole: at the top of page 9, the pattern says, “Place clip-on markers IN first instep st and IN last instep st to mark locations of DECREASE STS.” Those two sts no longer count as instep sts; 35 - 2 = 33 remaining instep sts.
Those clip-on markers are essential for understanding the rest of the toe instructions. They mark the sts that will wind up on top of the k3tog and sssk decreases, and will form squiggles along the edge of the toe. So, on round 2, you work to 2 sts before a stitch with a clip-on marker, then k3tog (so the marked st winds up on top). On round 4, you work to a stitch with a clip-on marker, then sssk (so the marked st winds up on top).
Thank you for the clarifications! Unfortunately, my brain must be in a bad knitting place right now — I don’t know why I’m confused by this when no one else was.
So the marked stitches count as neither instep nor sole? Thus 33 sole, 33 instep, 2 boundary markers = 68?
The decreases happen at both boundary markers on rounds 2 and 4?
Yes, the marked sts count as neither instep nor sole.
Yes, the decreases happen at both markers, on rounds 2 and 4.
Does it make sense now?
Yes, that works! Thanks so much
