Sad to have received my last club shipment

I love the yarn and patterns.  I’m just sad because I can’t renew to be a member next year.  Not that I don’t WANT to, but I found out I cannot wear wool socks anymore.  For some reason, they wear the skin off of my feet and cause sores.  I am currently trying to knit a pair out of non-superwash and one out of non-wool to see if it is just superwash wool that is the problem.  I’m still a BMFA fan and will spend my $ on the non-superwash products, ones for hats, mittens, scarves, and the like.  Just can’t justify joining the club when I can’t enjoy the yarn :(  And no one else in my family wears wool socks, so I can’t knit them as gifts and still be in the club.

Just had to share my woe.  Pity party over, on to the Thanksgiving leftovers!

wow Michele that is very sad indeed. And painful. Well for your sake I hope it is the superwash although it is a new one on me.

I’ve talked about it to many people trying to work out why. Everyone seems to focus on the superwash part of the wool. Personally I think it’s the rubbing of the coarser stitches on my feet, coarser compared to commercially produced Walmart style socks. :( I’m going to experiment and find the answer somehow. And I’ll enjoy your other fibers in the meantime!

Have you ever considered what soap you use,or the lotion you do or don’t use on your feet and legs? majority of the time one doesn’t rinse the soap out of the wool…
I once had a friend, who was having a simular problem..I showed her how to care for wool..even using a conditioner in final rinse…Zhammm…no more problems..

Patricia, please share what you do because I have a daughter who swears she’s allergic, but she’ll wear things that have wool.

I like that idea, Tina! I’d love to learn about what other things you can make with sock yarn. I love to expand my repertoire.

How to treat/care for Woolens: wool is a natural hair product..
So, first besure your water is lukewarm (like for a baby), fill basin full enough to cover garment, then add hair shampoo, a few drops, swish around to dissolve, then submerge garment gently in water until well covered…allowing it to soak up the water..leave for about 15 minutes, pushing it down now and then…Drain off water, holding garment away from water, against sink..Now, add new water, a few drops of hair conditioner, swish around to dissolve..release garment allow to absorb water..leave for another 15 minutes..drain..squeeze NOT WRING..add more water to rinse..swish..release..squeeze gently removing water..Roll in towel,,SQUEEZE NOT WRING..to remove excess water..Block in to shape..leave to dry..
What happens is that the wool has not been softened..remains itchy…

Whoops! I forgot one important step..that is to place garment ON AIR ONLY in the dryer, to fluff up, the proceed to the blocking..

Actually, it could be a heat/humidity thing. When our daughter was younger, her baby sitter told me this one: When her daughter was a baby, she rushed her to the doctor because, as she described it “the entire bottom of her feet was peeling off”. Doc took one look and asked if she was wearing sleepers with feet. Yep! Doc told mom to cut the feet off the sleepers - cured! So those things that we value in wool socks - warmth and wicking (but where can the moisture really go when your feet are in shoes?) may be working against you. One thought is sandals - but not so practical in slush. Cotton soles with BMFA uppers and legs?

Hmmm, lots of good suggestions! I use Soak and Euclan as my wool wash. Maybe that is part of the problem. Maybe I need to go away from a non-rinse wash and go back to Dawn dish soap ;) And I do knit mittens, hats and gloves. However shawls will take more than one skein of the club yarns….

I do only have this problem on my feet, not my hands or any other part that comes into contact with SW wool.

And I do like the idea of finding other projects we can make (other than funky monkeys LOL) with our sock yarn!
