Logging In

Logging in is easy as pie. Look for the Login section at the top of the right column. If this is your first time logging into the 2009 Rockin’ Sock Club blog, your username is the email address you used when you registered for or renewed your sock club membership. You must type in your email address/username in all lowercase, even if you normally use capital letters in your address.

Your password is:

bluemoonfa

Enter both your username and password, and click Login. You will be logged into the blog, able to comment and add posts. Once you’ve logged in for the first time, use the “Edit your profile” link to make changes to your email, display name and so on. We strongly recommend that you update your password to something a little more secure and personal, and to fill in your display name so that your posts and comments display properly.

When you reset your password, remember that it is case-sensitive, so “password” isn’t the same as “Password”, for example.

Tech note: Some folks have reported an error message showing up when they try to login that refers to cookies, and some 2007 blog members aren’t able to login for cookie-related reasons. Jump down in the Help text to find out how to delete the old cookie, although we don’t expect this to be as much of a problem this year (2009).

Resetting Your Password

If you forget your password, use the “Forgot your password?” link under the login form to recover it. This takes you to a page requesting your email address. Please fill in your email address, and then confirm it, and click the “Get New Password” button. You will be emailed an email titled “[Rockin' Sock Club '09] Password Reset”, which will say:

Someone has asked to reset the password for the following site and username.

http://www.rockinsockclub.com

Username: (your user name will be here)

To reset your password visit the following address, otherwise just ignore this email and nothing will happen.

http://www.rockinsockclub.com/wp-login.php?action=rp&key=(username specific key will be here)

Click on the second link in that email. It will take you back to the login screen, but there will be a message at the top of the login box that says “Check your email for your new password”. Check your email again - you should have a new message with “[Rockin' Sock Club '09] Your new password” as the subject line. If you don’t see it in your inbox, check your spam or junk mail folder before trying it again.

Once you’ve gotten the second email with the password in it, go back to the login screen and log in with your username and the temporary password you’ve just received. At this point you need to click on the “Edit your profile” link at the top of the right column to change your password to something you will remember.

Clearing the RSC Cookie

If you’re getting an error message about cookies when you try to login, especially if you were a blog member in 2007, try clearing your cookies for this site. We know this is an ugly, boring, technical task. But you’ve knit sock patterns way more complicated than this!

Here’s how to get rid of the cookie:

In Firefox: Click on Tools > Options > Privacy and click the Show Cookies button. You’ll get a list of all your cookies, sorted alphabetically. Scroll down to the rockinsockclub.com cookie, select it, and click Remove Cookies.

In Internet Explorer 7: Click on Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Select the Settings button from the Browsing History section. This opens another window; click the View Files button. You’ll see a list of all your cookies. If you sort your cookies by Internet Address, you should be able to find the rockinsockclub.com cookie. Select it and hit the Delete key on your keyboard.

In Internet Explorer 6: Click on Tools > Internet Options > General tab > Click the Settings button in the Temporary Internet files section. This opens another window; click the View Files button. You’ll see a list of all your cookies. If you sort your cookies by Internet Address, you should be able to find the rockinsockclub.com cookie. Select it and hit the Delete key on your keyboard.

In Safari: Preferences > Security tab > click the Show Cookies button. You’ll see a list of your cookies; find the rockinsockclub.com cookie, select it, and hit the Delete key.

In Camino: Preferences > Privacy tab > click the Show Cookies button. You’ll see a list of your cookies; find the rockinsockclub.com cookie, select it, and hit the Delete key.

After you’ve cleared the old cookie, close your browser down completely and then restart it. Try logging into the site again.

If you still can’t get in, or you think we might have the wrong address for you, head on over to the Contact page and and let us know what email address you would like to use to login with by sending a message with technical support in the subject line.

This has worked for some members, but not all. If it doesn’t work for you, please go ahead and go to the cookie diagnostic page and tell us more about what happened. Thanks!

Posting

To write a post, either click on the “write a post” link or click, once in the WordPress publishing interface, click on the “Add New” tab.First things first: Give your post a title. This is really important. It will post without it, but to be kind to everyone else, please give it one. Then, add some content. There are “buttons” at the top of the post box which will let you customize it up a bit. If you highlight some text and click on them, they will do the following things:

  • b will make whatever is highlighted bold
  • i will make it italic
  • Link will open a box where you can put in a url to another site
  • b-quote will make a block-quote, which will do different things in different browsers, but will essentially set aside a bit of text narrower than the rest of your post.
  • del should give you text with a line through it
  • ins should give you text that’s underlined or emphasized (depending on your browser)
  • img will open a box asking for the url to an image file (not one that’s on your computer, but one that’s either on the blog server or on the web somewhere), and then will insert that image into the post. Please don’t use this. (see below for how to put pictures into your post)
  • ul defines an un-ordered list (like this one)
  • ol defines an ordered list (a, b, c or 1, 2, 3)
  • li is a list item in a list
  • code, more, and lookup should just be left alone
  • close tags will do exactly that - it will close any open tags you’ve got in your post

Once you’ve added some content, check the box(es) for any categories that apply (although generally all your posts will be in the Notorious Sock Knitters category), and then click publish if you’re ready to post it, save if you want to save it and come back and write more in it later, or save and continue editing if you want to save what you’ve got but keep working on it right now.

Adding Pictures

To add a picture to your post, please first make sure that your picture is no bigger than 500 pixels wide. Firefox doesn’t seem to have any problems scaling pictures down to fit, but IE insists on displaying them full size, which tends to mangle the template something fierce.

Once you’ve scaled your picture down to a workable size, take a look at the section right below the post window. In the blue bar you’ll see “upload” and “browse all”. Under “upload” there are three boxes - next to the first one (file) is a button that says “browse”. Clicking that will let you look through your computer to find the image you want to upload. Once you’ve located your file, you can either just click the “upload” button, or you can give it a title and a description, neither of which display on the page, but are displayed if your picture can’t be found on the server and are very helpful for people who use page readers.

Once you’ve uploaded your picture, click on “browse”, and the one you uploaded should be the first one that comes up. To insert that picture into your post, click on the picture, and then choose the options to either post it full size, as a thumbnail, or only to display the title, and click “send to editor”. This will insert the image into your blog post.

You can type around, below, or above the image, whatever you would like to do. To wrap the text around a small image, select the image and try clicking the “Align left” or “Align right” icons.

Deleting Your Cache

In Firefox: Click on Tools > Clear Private Data

In Internet Explorer: Click on Tools > Internet Options > general tab > browsing history > delete > delete all.
