Ding Dong, Knock, Knock, Knock

Camp Crows Feet, Camp KnittyhaHA, Not Socks, Notorious Sock Knitters | May 01, 2009
By Alice in the Heartland

sneak, sneak, sneak,

peeeeeeek,

tiptoe, tiptoe,

glance,

plop!

Knock, Knock, Ding Dong!

(run away, run away)

You’ve just received a virtual May Basket from a fellow club member!

(Don’t pass it on the violets will droop.)

Just visualize a small Dixie cup with a pipe cleaner handle filled with violets and Bracht’s candies, oh and meltaway peppermints.

Left on  your doorsteps by a secret admirer. (Which this isn’t because you all know who left this as it’s at the top of the page.)

Hugs and Happy Happy May Day, Alice in the Heartland

P.S. Happy (later in) May birthday Tina!

We’re Back! Re-entry from Camp Knitty HaHa.

Camp KnittyhaHA | April 08, 2009
By Alice in the Heartland

Just thought all the club members should know what a great time we had a camp this year. Tina, Steph, Cat and JC with the help of Cockeyed (Debbi), Debra, and Guido (Becky) pulled out all the stops and did a fabulous job flying by the seat of their collective pants. We had great food, wonderful facilities, a great location and the best campers ever. Yes I’m gushing but camp this year is worth a gush or 4. We actually got to dye BMFA yarn with BMFA dye with Tina leading the exploration. Debra and Becky were along to assist most of the classes. (BTW Thanks again Debra for the assist on that 3rd skein.) JC was doing her improve your skills thing with new cast-offs to go with all the cast-ons we learned last year. Cat’s class is a secret and you just had to be there. Sorry everyone who didn’t come this year. Stephanie let us in on her knitting method - lever style. She says “throwing” is derived from this style. She wants to empower us to speed up our knitting to what it was before the Victorian era got a hold of things. Imagine being able to complete a sock a day and still have time for all your mundane tasks like laundry, shopping and cooking. Really neat. I’ll let you know how I’m doing with that some time after 28 days.

Now to the fun stuff. We made project bags with Cockeyed at Joe’s Crab Shack the first day and in the evening played Knitting Jeopardy the first night. One camper on each team was the “buzzer” and everyone including the buzzer were the players. Lots of fun and the “easier” questions were the harder for us to get.

Wednesday was iPhone bag knitting with Cat and a new stitch patten that gives a diagonal look to the finished project. In the evening we had movie night. The Lady From Sockholm. film noir sock puppets. A great giggle and a chance to knit, learn to spin, and smooze.

Thursday was suppose to be an afternoon to our own deviced but Tina and Steph got their heads together and we ended up going on team scavenger hunts. Great times were had negotiating with other teams for use of unique items. Like a hair stylists skills, Stephan’s “Jazz Hands” and various completed socks which all depended on who in your group brought which socks to camp. Of course it ended in a tie and they had a great tie breaker all ready to go. Then we proceeded to make it the impossible find. Took 3 trade offs before someone found the book in the book shelves right outside the main room. Plain sight gets you every time.

Friday was Tina’s time to shine. In the afternoon we were treated to a slide show of where she goes for inspiration and color ideas. We were even told which ones to expect as colorways in the near future maybe even for the club. Look forward to it folks they were fantastic. In the evening was the mascot parade with stories and just as fabulous as every year. Tina (or maybe it was Debbi) got up another slide show of “little know facts” about each camper and paired it with a photo of each camper. It helped everyone get a better feeling for who their campmates were even if they weren’t on the same team.

All in all a most wonderful experience and I wish all of you could have been there. But in series because camp needs to be small to feel like camp. Here’s to many more in the future!

We are dyeing yarn for the Camp store.

And I know you are going to find this really hard to believe but I cannot make up my little color mind about what we should bring.

So dearest NSK’s any color requests?

If so put them here in comments and we will do our best to fulfill them.
( Requests not orders)

Happy Spring!

Campish Preparedness II

Camp KnittyhaHA | March 13, 2009
By Tina

Come dye with me.

Playing in my color world. To prepare for this I want you for the week or so before Camp to pay very close attention to the colors in your world. Look closely at what you have surrounded yourself with; wall color, furniture, clothing even your car color-wise. Pay attention to how being in places where a certain color is predominant makes you feel. I want you to look at how certain colors in nature occur together and look at how they move from one to another. Our world is colored in bright obvious ways and in subtle shaded ways. Even if we are not conscious of it our brain takes this information in all the time. What I am asking is that we bring it more into focus and give it some attention and thought.
This is kind of like being on a color adventure or safari. Take notes if you want. A color journal for the week would be awesome but not mandatory. What I want is for you to become really sensitive to the color of your world.
I would also like you to bring something with you like a picture or piece of fabric, skein of yarn… that has your favorite colors in it. I would also like you to bring something that has color in it that might not be your most comfortable color place.

That covers it!
See you soon.

In that whole your wish is our command as long as we can make it world realm, JC Briar has consented to teach the following Bind-OFf Bonanza class. Yeah JC!!
JC will share her vast knowledge and skills in teaching us about supple and seamless bind-offs for sock tops, bind-offs that blend into ribbing, and decorative bind-offs.
Here is what she needs you to bring with;
Create three swatches in k1, p1 rib, and three swatches in stockinette, as follows: Cast on 10 stitches (or more, if you like). Work even in rib or stockinette for 1″ (or more, if you like). Cut yarn, leaving a tail AT LEAST four times the width of the swatch. Place stitches on stitch holder or spare needle. Then create a fourth swatch in k1, p1 rib (for a total of seven swatches); do NOT cut the yarn for this last swatch.
Materials
Plain, smooth, light colored, worsted-weight yarn; needles of a size appropriate for your yarn; a second set of needles, two sizes smaller than the first set; a crochet hook, roughly US size G/6 (4mm); a tapestry needle.

Has everyone gotten their homework packages??
Stay tuned tomorrow where I will tell you what I would like you to do to prepare yourself for my class.

Ahoy there Notorious Sock Knitting Campers! I am Angeus Mc Craebe your Camp host. Although this dyer sitting here tells me I am actually the mascot and that she is in fact the host. Shhhh… don’t tell her but just between you and me I have to say you are better off with me as your host and the she as your mascot. Just saying, we crustaceans know how to rock it out.
We know where all the best rocks are and can ride a tide like nobody’s business and do not even get me started on the whole walking sideways thing. Really try it sometime and let’s see how you come off. I could pick me up a few sticks and some seaweed and even throw a few stitches while doing my horizontal crawl. UH OH! The dyer’s eyes have that scary gleam in them. I think I might have borrowed a wee bit of trouble for you folks.

So sorry! I just wanted to introduce myself so we could get to know each other a bit before the tide rolls out.

see ya soon

Camp Knitty who?

Camp KnittyhaHA, Notorious Sock Knitters | February 24, 2009
By Tina

That would be Camp KnittyhaHA!
At the Resort at Port Ludlow in that week at the end of March, that flows right into April. Where there will be lovely spring breezes and sun ( I swear, I have this on good authority ) and lots and lots of knitting. Great fun. That is the theme of Camp this year, fun. As much sock knitting related hilarity and creativity as we can cram squeeze into 5 days.

At the end of this week, we are sending out your Camp preparedness packages and your homework challenge. Get your needles ready NSK’s and that includes you too, Steph and Cat. I do believe I have foiled your slacker plan to use the chicken forever and ever, as your camp project. ( I can feel this so backfiring on me. Can’t you?)

I have to tell you that when I found out that they were closing Rosario for a few years I panicked. You know that feeling when your whole abdomen seizes and you cannot breathe. Yep, that is the one I am talking about. In waltzes the ever so lovely and wonderful Dana Barrett who worked really hard to find us a place to have Camp. Thanks to Dana we have the Resort at Port Ludlow.
It is a beautiful setting. olympics
Paul, the Inn manager and his staff are very excited to have us.
paul
I knew it was the place for us when I saw this feathered friend.

The clincher for me though was when I mentioned the whole vegetarian issue and was met with respect and some of the best food I have ever eaten. These people know the Inn keeping business and I think that we will be happy here.

I know I am really excited. I am looking forward to seeing all of you, having a massive amount of knit fun, being around the water and the cheese. Paul knows his cheese!
See you soon.

P.S. On March 1st the prices for rooms revert to normal pricing so please make sure you have reserved your rooms by then.
