Designer's Corner, March Kit Questions | March 23, 2008
Hi, I’m JC, and I hope y’all like the Leafling pattern in this month’s kit. It’s another example of a design that ended up a good distance from where it began. In this case, it all began with a stitch pattern that caught my eye: a simple chevron pattern with a columns of purl dots. Hmm, I thought. A rib pattern like that would work well for socks. In Socks that Rock, of course. So I played around with the pattern on paper, charting out a bunch of variations–I tend to do that a lot–then swatched a few of them. As I was swatching, it dawned on me: why not arrange the decreases into feathers or leaves, rather than a plain chevron?More charting and swatching: oh, yeah, I liked that that variation. But instead of a rib that went all the way around the leg and all the way across the instep, how about just one panel running the length of the sock?Bingo, that’s what it had to be. Chart out a slick way of switching from a matching rib to the main pattern, cast on, and away we go.But what kind of heel? Usually I like flap-and-gusset heels, but I’d just finished reading Cat Bordhi’s New Pathways for Sock Knitters, so naturally I had to try a gusset-and-flap heel instead, with the gusset increases flowing from the leaf pattern. Sweet! Bonus: getting the heel stitch to cup all the way around the heel, for durability and cush padding. So the Leafling socks were a fun designing adventure. Hope y’all find them a fun knitting adventure!-JC

pardon my boneheadedness, all. i do seem to be the only one here with a toe issue. duh.
i’m knitting both socks at once, in the ’small’ size, using two sets of 5 dpn’s. i had to bag stitch markers almost immediately, because they weren’t working with my mind, or the dpn’s. my stitch counts are correct, unless 60 st per sock is not correct.
the instruction for concluding ‘foot’ before beginning ‘toe’, reads: “End having worked round 7 of dotted leaves pattern. Next round: k30(33,36), removing markers indicating dotted leaves pattern. PM to indicate end of instep sts and beginning of sole sts. Knit to end of round.” then, for ’symmetrical toe’, “Work even in St st until foot is approximately 1-3/4″ less than desired length, then shape toe as follows:” <snip>
so. how do the stitches get divided for the decreases? does the dotted leaves pattern end up centered among the instep stitches? seems like a no-brainer that it ought to (because there’s no special instruction for making the other sock be a mirror-image); but i’m confused as to how this happens without my ending up with one odd stitch on the instep, since dotted leaves is a 21-stitch pattern. or do i just be off by one slightly to the left of the stitch pattern on one sock and to the right of it on the other? does that one stitch even matter at all before time to graft?
everything i think of to do seems to me impactful enough that it would have had an explicit instruction if it were right. since the instructions don’t tell me to do any of what i think might work, i don’t think any of my ideas can be right.
you’d think i’d have had trouble with the heel, but - noooooo … i’m the weirdo with the toe problem. i welcome suggestions and/or explanations.
thank you ~

I have knitted 8-10 pairs of socks without much trouble but this heel is throwing me for a loop. With past sock patterns…. the heel stitches are on one needle and the instep stitches are on the other (i knit with 2 circs) and i have done a few different types of heels but this one has me stumped. i have done the slip1 knit1 part and am trying to figure out the w & t part…. i finished last RSC heel and even made another pair but to w & t and still be doing the knit on the R side and P on the W side and work the leafing pattern… how does that work??? working in the round and “R and W side P and K” together???? HELP… i really love this socks, and don’t want to quit and don’t have anyone at a LYS to ask for help. Thank you to anyone that can help me and let me finish and wear this gorgeous socks proudly!!!

I’m just getting started on Leafling, and on round 1 of the leg I get more than 27 sts, in fact I get 29 sts! Round 2 looks like 27. What am I missing?
