Leafling heel…..

Designer's Corner, General Knitting Questions, March Kit Questions | April 03, 2008

I have a question, but I guess it’s kinda sorta a general knitting question that happens to apply to this sock.  I have noticed that most socks that do the heel “flap” the way it is in this sock (slip 1, k 1), never tell you which way to slip.  Do I want the knit stitches to twist or not?  I always assume when told to slip, if not specified, that it is knitwise.  If they are supposed to be slipped purlwise, wouldn’t it make more sense to tell the knitter that?  I looked through the abbreviations just to make sure I wasn’t missing some important note on this, so if it is stated in the pattern somewhere, I’m sorry for asking a stupid question.  But, I seem to remember having this confusion before, so I think it’s standard isn’t it?  So….best to clear up the confusion once and for all, lol.  Thanks!!

Leafling Size

March Kit Questions | April 03, 2008

Hi -

I haven’t cast on yet. The Serendipity socks were my first experience with STR and I like it very much. I made the Serendipity socks in Medium on US1 DPNs. I’m thinking that since the Leafling yarn is mediumweight and the pattern calls for US 2 needles, that I would make a Small. Does that sound right? (My feet are 6.5 - 7 and not particularly wide or narrow.)

Thanks,

Marlene (”she who doesn’t swatch socks”)

Leafling - ssk not coming out right

General Knitting Questions, March Kit Questions | March 31, 2008

Help!  So far, I’ve done four repeats of the dotted leaves pattern, and for some reason, the ssk side isn’t coming out right.  The k2tog side has a nice ridge, defining the edge of the “leaves”, but the ssk side is only barely standing out, and the ssk stitches are clearly not doing what they should.

I had an experienced knitter look at what I’m doing, and she tells me I’m doing ssk right… did anyone else have this issue?  Is there something really painfully simple I’m not seeing?  It doesn’t look terrible, but it doesn’t look nearly as nice as the pictures on the pattern, either.  Makes me sad.

Finished my socks - March

I finished my socks yesterday. I am wearing them today. They seem big - the top ribbing fits beautifully and the toe is ok, but seems as if the heel is too big for my foot. Hoping a good washing snugs things up a bit, it often does.
